PERSONAL NOTES.

Air A. W. Hogg. M.P-, after a trying illness, is going South for a holiday. Captain H. Douglas, who took the barque Bankfields from Sydney to Fiji, came up to Auckland by the Navua. Dr. Solf, Governor of German Samoa, was a pasesnger for Samoa by the Tofua last week. He was accompanied by Mrs. Solf. Among the passengers by the steamer < Malwa, which arrived at Fremantle last i week from Colombo, were Sir Reginald Beauchamp and the Earl of Orford. Mr W. Burton, late of Fiji, and formerly of Auckland, where he was connected with commerce and banking, U spending a holiday at Auckland. He is stopping at the Northern Club. Mr. J. H. Matthews, late first assistant teacher at the Ellerslie public school,

was presented with an illuminated address by the residents of the district on the occasion of his transfer to the Grey Lynn school. Messrs. A. E. Relf (Auckland) and J. H. Board (Napier), the two English professional cricketers who have been coaching during the summer, have booked passages for London by the Arawa, which is to sail from Wellington on February 24. Mr. R. W. Hasclden, S.M., will shortly take up his duties as relieving magistrate at Wellington. Mr. R. J. Acheson, stipendiary magistrate and warden for Westland judicial and mining district* for the past five years, has been transferred to the Bay of Islands, with headquarters at Russell. Mr. R. S. Florance, at present at the Bay of Islands, goes to Blenheim, relieving Mr. T. Scott-Smith, who has been transferred to the One-hunga-Raglan district, in succession to Mr. 11. W. Northcroft (retired on superannuation). Major the Hon. A. A. Addington, of London, left Auckland on Friday for Ro-

torua. where he intends to spend sone time fishing. Sir Joseph Ward, who is slightly indisposed. has postponed his departure for the South till next week. Canon Pollock, one of the forerunners at the Anglican General Mission, is at present at Tokaanu on a trout-fishing excursion. Included amongst' Auckland residents who have booked passages Home by the P. and O. steamer Malwa, leaving here on February 16, are the following:—Mr. and Mrs. Waller, Mr. and the Misses (2) McGregor, Mr. F. E. Baume, M.P.. and Mrs. Baume. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. O’Brien and Miss O'Brien, Hon. Mr., Mrs., and Miss Seymour Thorne George. The death was announced last week at Montreal, Canada, of Sir George Drummond, at the age of 80. Deceased was a Senator and chairman of the Banking and Commerce Standing Committee of the Senate, president of the Bank of Montreal, vice-president of the Royal Trust Company, director of the Canad ian-Pa-eific Railway, and other companies.
