Apology Accepted. Mr. Travers Humphreys, for the defendant, said that be hoped to make a statement which would render it unnecessary to call any witnesses. Mr. Keunerley Rumford was, of all persons, the least desirous that it should be thought that he objected to criticism, favourable or otherwise, of himself, or of his distinguished wife, or of anyone else. Nor did Mme. Clara Butt object to Criticism, so long as it was fair, whether favourable or unfavourable. The assault iu this cas?, which, of course, fnu q be admitted by Mr. Kenneriey Rumford. was committed in the belief that the article was one of a series which Mr. Keunerley Rumford thought wore persistent attacks on Mme. Butt. Whether a reasonable person could or could no’t construe the article as an attack, it was never intended as stub, but as fair criticism, and the last thing iu the mind of the writer was that there should be anything of the nature of an attack on the lady. Mr. Kenuerley Rumford had left himself in bls (counsel’s) bands, and it only remained to state that that gentleman extremely regretted what he bad done, as his a thick on Mr. Colics hud been a course pursued under a mistaken idea. Mr. Kenuvriey Rumford accepted the statements of Mr. Bodkin, aud he might rest iu>suie.t that there was no intention iu the article us he thought. He desired to express bis regret for comniittiug tins “technical assault,” and he tendered an expression of regret and apology to the Court. If that would avoid the necessity for going fully into the matter, that would probably be the course desired by Mr. Colles. The summons was withdrawn accordingly.
