AUCKLAND.

January 3. Garden Party. THE grounds of “Greystone Knowe” presented a gay scene on Tuesday afternoon, December 28, when the Hon. and Mrs. Fowlds invited a large number of guests to an enjoyable garden fete, given in honour of the Young Maori Party from the North. Mr. Albert Wilson, principal of St. Stephen’s Maori School, addressed the guests, apologising for the absence of Mr. Fowlds, who had been recalled to Wellington. Dr. Buck also gave an address, and explained the aim of the Young Maori Party. Tea was served in a large marquee in the garden, and a string band discoursed sweet music throughout the afternoon. Mrs. Fowlds and her son received the guests, the former wearing a French grey cloth toilette with black satin braidings, and large brown hat with blue ostrich plumes; Miss Fowlds wore a dainty gown of vieux rose cloth, and becoming hat of the same shade; Miss May Fowlds was in a pretty white muslin frock. Gorrie, white linen shirt dress. Children's Christmas Party. A delightful Christmas partv was given by Mrs. E. C. Firth, at “Aratiatia.” Epsom, for the friends of her three little boys. There was a large number of guests, among the grown-ups being lady Lockhart. Mesdames Buckland. Browning, T. Hope Lewis, Guy Williams, R. Horion, R. Burns, Markham, W. Colliock, Gordon, F. Waller, Seccombe, C. Nathan. Ferguson. Biss. Roberton, Tawford. Noakes, Reade. Eliot, Savage, Misses Lloyd, M. Towle, Brown-

ing, Buddle, Tsobel Clark, Davey, Bouillion, McLaughlin, Buckland, and others. After some enjoyable games on the lawn, the email guests had tea, and then came the important part of the afternoon—the Christmas-tree, which had been set up in the billiard-room, and made a very pretty sight, loaded with gifts and decorated with flags, and tiny electric lights. To add to the illusion there was a real Santa Claus in the traditional robes of office, much to the mystification of some of the very small guests. Everything went off merrily, and as the little ones toddled off with their presents in their arms it was very evident that they had enjoyed Christmas 1908. Personal. Air. and Airs. B. AL .Latchfield and their son and daughter are visiting Auckland, and are staving at Glenalvon. Air. F. AL B. Fisher, ALP., and Mrs. lisher (Wellington) are also staying at Glenaivon. Air. and Airs. Eardley Reynolds, whi were in Auckland for the Christmas and New Year holidays, have now returned to Dunedin. Air. W. Al. Hannay and the blisses Hannay (2) are amongst other visitors to Auckland. Air. and Mrs. A r ineent Rice and their daughter, Miss Mab Riee, of Alt. Edqn, returned to New Zealand by the R.M.s. Corinthic last week after a year’s so journ in England and Capetown, S.A. Mr. and Airs. Rice spent some time in Glasgow with their daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Phillips, of Capetown, who were in Glasgow for a holiday-. Among the passengers by the R.M.S. Corinthic were Mrs. G. Oxley, of Auckland, who has been absent from New Zealand for about eight months on a holiday visit to Europe; also, Air. and Miss Daisy Reilly, of Hawera. They spent some time in Ireland. Miss Reilly, who has attained the highest musical honours in New Zealand, took lessons in singing in London from the well-known teacher, Madame Anna Fisher-Clutsam.
