I have to acknowledge with thanks receipt of a complimentary ticket for the ftianawatu Racing Club s summer meeting, e »hich opeus to-morrow. The Hippocampus gelding Moccasin is to be given a good spell, and will not be iisked to race 'again until the Wanganui (Winter meeting in May next. The Royal Artillery geiding Cohort was killed while schooling on the Feilding course last Saturday. His rider (11. Futcher) got ft nasty fall, but no bones were broken. ■Says a Southern exchange: “There are not many two-year olds in the Dominion that can give weight to Martyre, who looks like being a good advertisement for Martian. The Great Northern Derby candidate, Blaori King, recently picked up a screw, and his feet have been giving his trainer considerable trouble. The son of Merriwee jgoes very short in his work. The victory of Lord .Soult in the Palmerston North Stakes is further proof of the brilliancy of the little son of Soult. To carry 9.3, and run the journey in 1.13 2-5, is ft very high-class performance. The disqualification imposed upon the Jockeys I’ell and Whittaker by the Avondale Jockey Club, and endorsed by the higher authorities, expired on Saturday last. Whittaker is again riding work at Ellerslie. The brood mares Aleger and a mare by (Explosion—Stepfast have been purchased from Mr. E. W. Alison on behalf of Mr. 8. Green, and the pair are to be shipped Co Sydney by the Wimmera next Monday. Mr. J. Clark, of Gisborne, has purchased Mundic from Mr. Rooney, and this black eon of Gold Reef will in future be trained at Gisborne. The price paid was a lot less than Mr. Rooney gave for the gelding last July. The Auckland Metropolitan Committee Wet again last evning, when the appeal of B. Deeley against the 12 months’ suspension Imposed upon him by the Takapujia Jockey Club was further considered. Several witnesses were examined, after which it was decided to adjourn coining to a decision till ft future mee'ting, the suspension in the meantime to continue. A Palmerston North telegram states that ftu exhaustive inquiry was held last night as <o the running of Equltas, with Oliver up. In the Summer Handicap. The stewards .were unable to decide last night, and adjourned the inquiry till Monday morning dii the course, with the object of permitting ■the connections supplying further necessary evidence regarding speculation. The owner of Flingot also lodged a complaint against R. Young, who rode Flingot in the Bummer ’Handicap. This inquiry will also t>e dealt with on Monday. The action of the Auckland Racing Club Committee in holding over the appeal of the Jockey B. Deeley has been generally condemned in racing circles. It is understood the question of the legality of the decision to suspend Deeley was raised, and the inquiry w r as adjourned to allow of legal opinion being taken on the matter. Even if this was so, it would not take more than half tin hour to settle it, and give a verdict one way or the other, for it is the holding over of these inquiries for such a length <yf time that gives the impression that everything is not in order. D. Maher Is riding ns a freelance in England next and according to a London exchange this has caused a new clause to be inserted in the agreements made by certain stables with other jockeys for the coming season. The clause referred to stipulates that the Jockey Is only engaged for weights up to 8.7, It remaining at the discretion of the trainer whether another Jockey may be substituted on occasions when a hoi bp has to carry over that weight. Kkls means that the stables concerned are

prepared to employ Maher when opportunity offers, and Dillon Is another jockey whose services will be availed of under similar conditions. Though a freelance in other respects, Maher has already contracted to ride Bayardo in all his engagements next year. The annual meeting of the Waihl Jockey Club was held on Tuesday at Tanner’s Hotel, there being a fair attendance of members. Mr E. A. McLeay occupied the chair. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The membership fee was fixed at 10/6. Messrs Thomson, Morrow, McLeay, Furey, Neeve, Flett, and McGlashan, retiring members of committee, were re-elected. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:— Patron, Mr W. H. Herries; vice-patrons, Messrs H. Poland, M.P., and T. Gilmour; president, Mr D. McLean; vice-presidents, Messrs A. B. Buckland, W. M. Jackson, Vai. Brown, Hague 'Smith, R. 11. Wynyard, N. Mcßobie, G. Wurm, J. Tanner, W. Parsons, D. Dunne, Shotbolt, R. Hayward, and. T. Palmer; judge, Mr J. J. Scanlon; starter, Mr Hankins; handicapper, Mr Wynyard; clerk of the course, Mr C. Neeve treasurer, Mr G. McGlashan; clerk of scales, Mr D. Morrow; timekeeper, Mr J. Cochrane; auditors, Messrs Grant and Niekisson; secretary, Mr M. G. Power: course committee, Messrs McGlashan, Irwin, and Flett. Tn reference to the recent fight between two racehorses in England, my London correspondent says: — There was a desperate encounter on Newmarket Heath the other day, between two thoroughbred horses belonging to well-known Antipodean sportsmen. The combatants wore a yearling colt by Florizel TI. — Wise Flower, belonging to Messrs Clark and Robinson, and a 4-year-old colt by Collar — aJFrcda, owned by Mr Spencer Gollan. The attack was made by the yearling, who, after getting rid of his rider, savagely attacked the Freda colt, who happened to be trotting by at the time. For more than a quarter of an hour the two animals fought savagely, and the elder horse had all the worst of the deal. The yearling caught his opponent by the neck and severely mauled him. The Freda colt was borne to the ground, and his clothing, even to the bandages on his legs, was torn off. When he regained his feet the Freda colt endeavoured to knock the youngster out with his heels, but the yearling avoided the blows by keeping close to the sod of Collar. When the animals were parted, the Freda colt, who was much bigger than bis opponent, looked much the worse for wear, while the yearling had few marks on him. Eye-witnesses describe the fight as one of the most vicious and prolonged ever seen between horses, and states that the yearling’s cleverness iu avoiding the older horse’s attempts at reprisals was Quite remarkable. One wag suggested that the youngster should be christened “Freddie Welsh,” after the famous lightweight champion. (To the Sporting Editor of the “Star,** Auckland.) Dear Sir, — I notice In your morning contemporary, that Seldom appears as an acceptor In the Goldfields Cup. Thames. Kindly contradict it, as Seldom was scratched as soon as the weights appeared, I considering him most cruelly handicapped. — Yours truly, G. RING. £ £ 1 ORAKEI HACK MEETING. The Orakei Hack Meeting was held at Kohimararna on Christmas Day and attracted a fairly large attendance.
