December 15. After-noon Party. The Misses Glendinning, Fitzherbertstreet, entertained a party of friends on last Friday afternoon. A book-title competition created great interest, and was finally won by Mrs. A. Rennell: Miss Innes was second, and Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Rutherford tied for the third prize. All four ladies were presented with books. Those present included: Mrs. Scott, Mrs. and Miss Parker Smith, Mrs. Vernon, Mrs. Jolly, Mrs. (Dr.) O’Brien, Mrs. (Dr.) Greig, Mrs. Thompson. Miss Edith Wilson, Mrs. Wilson (Auckland), Mrs. McKnight, Mrs. A. Rennell, Mrs. Rutherford, Mrs. Opic, Mrs. Innes, and a few others. Orchestral Concert. The Orchestral Society gave the third concert at the Opera House on Tuesday night. There was a large audience, which thoroughly enjoyed the splendid programme provided. The only vocalist was Miss Laura Treleaven, who greatly pleased with her singing. Mr. Frank R. Johnston, of Wellington, again played a ’cello solo, which was the gem of the evening. Miss Treleaven wore an effective old rose Empire toilette, a largo cluster of pink roses finishing the corsage; Miss Gaustad was in cream silk. In the audience I noticed: Mrs. O’Brien. Wearing a black silk frock, with cream opera coat, with cream coque, fegtlnw collar: Miss Mona O’Brien, white muslin and lace: Mrs. Hartper. black brocade, eiustor of crimson roses; Mrs. Durward,

cream silk, delicately tinted embroidery on bodice; Mrs. Coombs, black chiffon taffeta; Miss Coombs, blue taffeta with cream net yoke; Mrs. Nash, black net lace robe over white silk, grey coat with cream laee medallions; Mrs. Palmer, white silk embroidered in black; Mrs. A. D. Thompson, long dull red embroidered coat worn over black evening dress; Mrs Wilson (Auckland), black velvet with Maltese lace berthe; Miss E. Wilson, pale blue floral muslin and cream lace: Mrs. Park, black silk with cluster of pale mauve flowers; Miss Park, pink voile and lace, long cream coat; Miss Dorothy Park, nil green evening frock; Mrs. Adam McDonald, black chiffon taffeta with cluster of crimson roses; Mrs. Hankins, black skirt, cream embroidered silk blouse. Prize-giving. The High School prize-giving ceremony took place at the Municipal Hall on Wednesday in the presence of a large number of relatives ami friends of the pupils. Amongst others T noticed: Mr. and Mrs. W. Rutherford, Mr. and Mrs. Hirseh, Mrs. Vernon, Mrs. Foote, Miss Mills, Mr. and Mrs. Durward, Mrs. Young, Mrs. and Miss Astburv. Mrs. Coombs, the Misses Drew, Miss Watson, Mrs. Smythe. Messrs. Vernon. Foote, Park, Nash, Hodder, Collingwood, Archdeacon Harper, Rev. T. .Tolly, and others.

Garden Party and Bazaar. On Wednesday afternoon a eucceseful garden party and small sale of work was held in Mr. K. Wilson’s garden, in aid of the Melanesian Mission fund. Miss Dolly Wilson was the originator of the idea, and with the willing and capable assistant? of girl friends made the little function a distinct success. Myriads of children revelled in a Christmas tree and a real Father Christmas. Mosdames Porritt, W. L. Fitxherbert, Mcßae, Bendall, Shute, Keeling. Rennell. Mts. and Miss McLennan, the Misses Abraham, W'aldegrave, Barnieoat, Slack, and others were present. Personal. Miss Gibbons (Wanganui) is spending a week with Mrs. H. F. Gibbons, Alexan-dra-street. Mrs. A. Guy and family left by the midnight express on Thursday for Rotorua, where they intend staying for six ■weeks. Mrs. W. Bendall and children have gone to vicit relatives in Wellington. Mrs. H. R. Waldegrave and the Misses W'aldegrave (4) have gone to Sumner, Christchurch, for a. long stay. Mrs. Fuller and her children have returned from a trip to Melbourne. Mrs. H. Cooper has returned from a short stay in Wellington.

Mrs. Wilson (Atteldand) is with her sister-in-law, Mrs. A. D. Thompson. , Mns. C. Ixruisaon and children have gone ’ for three weeks to the Foxton Heads. Mrs. Eliot and children have gone to Castlecliffe, near Wanganui, for the

Christmas holidays.
