The third game in the match at Paris between lasker and Janowski was won by Lasker in 37 moves. The fourth and fifth wore also won by Ijaske.r, making his score 41 games to Janowski’s L i A National Masters’ Tournament just concluded at Vilna in Russia ended in a victory for Rubenstein with a score of 101 games out of 15 played. Five players competed. each playing three games with the other. Hie second and third prizes were div’idefl between Hreymann and Rabanovitch. who scored 9 eadh and Chot-i--inirski was fourth with 71. Curiously enough Chotimirski, as in the St. Petersburg tournament, defeated Rubinstein once, sharing this honour with Salwe. Negotiations are proceeding in America for a match between F. J. Marshall and J. W. Showalter, as a preliminary to deciding the vexed question of the championship of that country. Mr. W. E. Napier, who met the late Rudolph Swidersky in 1902, and who played chess with him, says, in the •Pittsburg Despatch,” that from his own personal observation he learned to regard Swidersky as a man of “temperamental ups and downs.” He was a good musician, and after the loss of a game of chess he was accustomed to adjourn, “and to fight it out with himself on a grand piano.” Mr. Napier's opinion is that an abnormally sensitive natur** brought about Swidersky's untimely end. Anyone, who, in the event of the loss of a game of chess, dissolves in tears to the accompaniment of a Beethoven sonata deserves to have a ■elf infl ieted death ascribed, not to chess, but, rather, to an hysterical organisation.

N.Z. Championship. " The date for receiving entries closed with the hon. secretary *of " the N.Z. Chess Association on the 14th inst. The competitors are:—J. C. Grierson, E. J. Miles v and. A. W. O. Kelling (present champion) and R. J. Barnes (Wellington Workingmen’s Club), Edwin Hicks (Wellington South C.C.), J. Edwards (Otago C.C.), E. H. Severne (Hastings). Auckland Cheas Club. The ladder match between Mr. J. C. Grierson (challenged) and Mr. A. W. O. Davies (challenger) for Rung 1 and the Club Championship, was concluded last Thursday, when the fourth game, a “Sicilian Defence,” was won by the challenger. Mr. Grierson at a critical stage having to make five moves in so many minutes, did not go in for the best line of play, and gave his opponent an opportunity to win. The score after the first three games was one win each and a draw, thus showing the match to have been well contested. -Mr. C. Little has consented to act as umpire at the forthcoming chess championship. A member has come forward with an offer of two guineas to be awarded for the most brilliant game played in the chess championship. Chess Championship.
