October 29. A Delightful Afternoon. “A song title” afternoon was given on Monday by Mrs. John Deans (Riccarton) in honour of Mrs. Hutnfrey, of Wellington, who is staying with her. Miss B. Wood won the prize'for guessing the largest number correctly. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Maurice Denniston (Wellington), Mrs. J. Vernon, Mrs. G. Ronalds, Misses Cotterill (2), Symee, Boyle, Ogle, Nancarrow, Julius, Wilkin, Moore, Harley, Burns (2), Anderson (2), Merton, Hill, Gossett, Pyne (2), Molineaux, Strachey, Wood (2), Milne, Simpson-Perry (Sydney), Tumbnll, Thomas. Cook (2), Sanders, Burnett (Wellington), Gorrie (Auckland), McHwraith, and Cotton. A College Tea.
The lady students of Canterbury College entertained the professors and men students at afternoon tea on “The Cottage” lawn on Wednesday afternoon. The attendance was large, and the gathering was a great success. A dance was held at Miss Cox’s Assembly Rooms by the students on Saturday night to say farewell before leaving for their homes for the long vacation. Concert. The Christchurch Musical Union gave the fourth concert of their season on Tuesday evening, October 26th, at His Majesty’s Theatre. Dr. Bradshaw being unable to attend, Mr. H. H. Loughnan took his place as conductor, and wielded the baton most successfully. The orchestral numbers went splendidly. They included: Overture, “Oberon” (Weber); Symphony No. 4, “The Clock” (Haydn) ; ballet music, “Faust” (Gounod), Chaut Sans Paroles and Beethoven's Turkish March. Miss Daisey Lezard sang “When the Heart is Young” charmingly; she received an enthusiastic encore, and was presented with three beautiful bouquets. Mr. Sidney Williamson was unable to appear, so his place was filled by Mr. Farquhar Young. Miss Lezard wore a dainty robe of soft white silk with embroidered front panel; Miss Packer (leader of orchestra), black sequined net: Miss Rrma Young (pianiste), white muslin and lace. Amongst the many present were: Mrs. H. H. Loughnan, Miss Vio Parson, the Bishop and Mrs. Julius, Professor and Mrs. Blunt, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kaye. Mrs. Denniston, the Misses Gibson, the Misses Gardner, Miss Seeretan, Mrs. Winter Hall. Mrs. and Miss Young, Mrs. J. Fairhurst, Dr. and Mrs. Crooke, the Misses Cook. Personal.
Mrs. Wigram and Mrs. Beswick (C'hri-tehurch) are staying at Hanmer. Mrs. and Miss Wells (Amberley) are visiting friends in Christchurch. Other visitors in town are: Mrs. Bethel’ (Pahau Pastures), Mrs. E. C. Stud-l-.clme ( Waimate), Mr. and Mrs. L. de C. Malet (Clearwell), Mrs Sabill (Waddington) . Mr. and Mrs. Donald McLean (Mt. Hutt) are staying -with Mrs. Nancarrow (Armagh-st reet). Miss Burnett (Wellington) is the guest of Mrs. Andrew Anderson (Opauea). Mrs. T. Williamson (Gisborne) is visiting friends in Christchurch. Mis Wimperis (Dunedin), Mrs. B. Fell (Nelson), Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Harley, have taken a house at Sumner, and have let their Christchurch residence to Mr. and Mrs. Molineaux, of the Bank of New South Wales. Mre. George Harper (Ricearton) has gone on a visit to Timaru. Mrs. Morton (Ricearton) has returned from the North Island. Mrs. Michael Campbell (Arons ide) has returned from the West Coast. Mrs. Pyne (Bealey-a venue, Christchurch) is staying with Mrs. H. Knight, Racecourse Hill. Miss Borrie (Dunedin) Is the guest of Mrs. Walter Thomas, Colombo-street,
Christchurch.
