October 22. Afternoon Tea. Afternoon teas have been the order of the day (or week), and I have two very pleasant ones to record, the first being given by Mrs. Barker, sen., at “Kaiti” on Wednesday last. Mrs. Barker received her guests in the hall, and was gowned in a handsome brown silk, trimmed with rich guipure and bead trimming. Among the others I noticed were; Miss'Barker, in a dress of blue and white cheek muslin, with trimmings of white net and lace; Miss E. Barker, white tucked lawn; Miss F. Rees, floral muslin of dark blue, hat to match; Mrs. Stock, electric blue taffeta trimmed ■with lace, blue hat of same shade trimmed with flowers, etc.; Mrs. Carmichael, dark navy blue voile, navy hat; Mrs. Kells, heliotrope linen costume, heliotrope straw hat with trimmings of net, etc.; Mrs. A. Seymour, black chine eilk, white feather boa, large rose pink floral hat; Mrs. -C. Sainsbury, white muslin with “Peter Pan” collar, and white muslin hat. An At Home. On Friday afternoon another delightful “At Home” was given by Mrs. H. White at her beautiful residence “Acton.” Unfortunately the weather, which was extremely windy, prevented one from strolling round the garden, which was a blaze of flowers. A dainty afternoon tea was served in the diningroom, the table being prettily decorated with red and white flowers. Mrs. White was wearing a striking gown of black grenadine over white taffeta, trimmed with medallions 'of white lace; her daughter, Miss White, wore green and white muslin; Mrs. Coop, green and white striped voile with incrustations of ■lace, etc.; Miss White (Christchurch), very pretty Empire dress of violet Sicilian cloth trimmed with rich embroidery of the same colour; Miss — White (Christchurch), green and white muslin; Mrs. Mann, light brown Alpaca coat and skirt with touches of a darker brown braid, brown silk hat; Mi's. Parkes, very pretty coat and skirt of pale pink linen, white feather boa and burnt straw hat with bo.ws of black velvet; Mrs. Williams, pale heliotrope muslin with touches of lace, large violet hat; Mrs. Mac Lean, grey linen coat and skirt, small grey toque with black wings; Mrs. Jex-Blake, heliotrope linen with buttons and trimmings of violet, large heliotrope hat with roses, etc.; Mrs. W. Barker, small blue and white silk piped with blue of deeper shade, large straw hat swathed with Paisley scarf; Miss Schumacher, coat and skirt of pale pink Alpaca, violet straw hat trimmed with violets; Miss Willis, brown check coat and skirt, brown hat; Miss Doughty i( Wellington), pretty white muslin, large black hat with wreath of flowers; Miss de Lautour, white pique and floral hat; Miss Pyke, green mousseline de soie, dark green hat; Miss M. Wachsmann, white silk arid black hat; Miss' Williamson, fawn check coat and skirt, large hat of golden brown crinoline straw; Miss Nixon (Dunedin), dress of eau de nil voile; Miss F. Barker, heliotrope striped muslin, large violet hat with white wings; Miss E. Barker, violet coat and skirt; Miss Gray, white flannel coat and skirt, brown and green straw bat; Miss Mac Lean, pink gingham gown, burnt straw hat trimmed with scarf; Miss Evans, blue and white muslin, white hat trimmed with blue; Miss Donner, blue mousseline de soie. large white chip hat; Miss Scott, the Misses Tucker (2), Miss Black, heliotrope check silk, large violet hat with white plumes; Miss B. Miss Doughty (Wellington) is on a visit to Mrs. de Lautour, Kaiti. Mr. and Mrs. F. Lysnar returned from Hawke’s Bay by the Victoria on Sunday last. Mrs. and Miss Tullock have returned from Christchurch; also, Miss — Tullock from Sydney. Mrs. A. Seymour, who has been visiting relatives in Canterbury, returned borne on Sunday.
