ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

C Neilson, Devonport. — Dollar was ridden at Avondale by H. Priest, and at Takapuna by Patterson. [Wager. — Master Soult beat Husbandman in the N.Z. St. Luger, which is run over a. distance of a mile and three-quarters. {Metropolitan. — Havoc was bred in Auckland, being purchased as a yearling by the late Mr W. R. Wilson, and did all his racing in Australia. In the colours of Mr Wilson, he won the Australian Cup and a number of weight-for-age races. Master Soult is still the ruling favourite for the New Zealand Cup, with Bobrikoff next in command. ■The ex-New Zealander Waihuku is now ft member of W. Leyshon’s team at Flemington. Private advices from Victoria state that Trafalgar is the ruling favourite for the Melbourne Cup. The Hutt Licensing Committee refused the Hutt Park Racing Club a conditional license for their meeting next week. Mr. Morse’s adjustments for the minor events at the A.R.C. Spring Meeting are due on Monday, the 25th inst. No less than 28 nominations have been received for the Juvenile Handicap on the concluding day of the A.R.C. Spring Meeting. The Auckland-owned Aim well failed In his engagements at the recent Otaki Meeting,. in a second and a third going down to the credit of the son of Soult. Mr H. R. McKenzie’s horses Royal Scotland and Monoplane are now located at W. Gall’s stables, Green-lane, in charge of J. Griffin. During the Hawke’s Bay meeting, Mr Lowry disposed of the three-year-old filly Glissade, by Soult — Lissadurn, to Mr A. Ellingham. The following foulings are announced: Blanca Manola, filly to Salvadan; Lady Hune, filly to Gladstone; and Vieux Rose, ft colt to Extractor. Workmen are now busily engaged In draining the centre of the Taka puna Jockey Club’s course, and it is understood the intention is to form a sports ground. J. Barden has been engaged to ride Trafalgar In the Melbourne Cup. So far, he has not had the pleasure of Rteerirg’ the winner of the big race at Flemingt m. A would-be buyer recently priced the C.J.C. National winner Compass, but the price quoted, «00gs, did not lead to business. Mr T. IT. Lowry’s Multiform colt Multiple is described as oure of the handsomest horses seen out at the recent Hawke’s Bay meeting. The Coronet gelding Coronetted wai t)iougilt from the South by the Rarawa Inst Week to fulfil bis engagements at the Auckland Spring Meeting. Within the past twelve months, horses ■trod by Havoc (the half-brother to Trenton) have won the Epsom, Doncaster, and foorak Handicaps, and the Oaklelgh Plate.

Thakur, a native jockey attached to the stable of Mr “J. 8. in India, was recently thrown and killed whilst riding the New Zealand bred Chivalry home from the Poona racecourse. According to the Wellington “Post,** Mr J. Armitage, of Auckland, has been appointed judge to the Hutt Park Racing Club, which holds its opening meeting on the 21st inst. It is understood that the Auckland Racing Club intend to erect 50 loose boxes at Ellerslie, near the Green-Jane entrance, and that the work will be put in hand after the Spring Meeting. Misstime’s full-brother, Mischief, by Birkenhead — Miss Never, won the Queensland Guineas, one mile, on October 2nd, in 1.40 J. He is engaged in the A.J.C. St. Leger run in the autumn of next year. Ihe ponies Necktie and Inrprimus have been placed under offer to a Wellington sportsman, and the pair have been nominated for the Hutt Park Racing Club’s inaugural meeting, on the 21st inst. The Auckland Trotting Club have received record acceptances for their Spring Meeting, which opens on Saturday next, and everything at present points to a most successful gathering. A^ er a long spell from racing, during which time she has been at the stud, Jewellery has made her re-appearance on the tracks at Ellerslie, and is now under the charge of R. Stewart. The Flintlock gelding Loch Fyne hag Been taken in hand again by W. Mobberan<* Croat Northern winner of J»«8 figures amongst the nominations for the Onehunga Steeplechase. It Is evidently the intention to give bcotty a rest from hurdling, as the son of St. Leger is an absentee from the hurdle races, but figures amongst the nominations for the flat events at the A.R.C. Spring Meeting. A number of hunters are at present in ■work at Ellerslie with a view to the hunters’ events at the A.R.C. Spring Meeting. Among the number is the veteran Tip, which is at present looking as gay as a two-year-old. The New Zealand-bred mare Rotoiti was recently puichased by A. Skirviug, and now forms one of that trainer’s team at Flemington. Rotoiti created a favourable impression in her schooling essays on the other side. Mr J. R. McDonald’s champion, Gold Crest, made his re-appearance at the recent Otaki meeting, after a lengthy spell. The son of Gold Reef was repoited to be a trifle on the big side, and he finished out of a place. In winning the Labour Day Handicap, on the opening day of the Otaki meeting, Lady Medallist won her fifth race this season. Up to the present, Ladv Medallist’s record as a three-year-old reads: 7 starts, “ wins, one second, one third. Mr H. Oxenham has received word from Currandooly stud that his Melbourne Cup winner Acrasia foaled a bay colt to San Iraucßco, and the youngster, who has a blaze face and one white fetlock, is described as a “regular plum.’’ The statement which has appeared in print that Housewife, the dam of Penates recently succumbed after producing twins, proves to be incorrect, as it was only her progeny by Murillo which did not survive. Housewife visits the same sire again. Kooringa, who was backed for the Melbourne Cup some time back. Is showing form at the right time. At the Adelaide Hunt Club’s meeting recently, he won the President’s Handicap, 1} mile, with 9.5, which is Ist Gib more than he has to carry at Flemington. While being Indulged in a run In the paddock, Ngapnka struck himself, and although the injury is not of a very serious nature, his trainer, F. MacManemin, advised Mr. Wallace to allow the son of Soult to drop out of his Wellington engagements, for which all arrangements had been made for him to fulfil. The New Zealand bred Motoa, which ran third in the Toorak Handicap, has only faced the starter three times In the last twelve months, and his forward running suggests that he may be expected to do much better in the near future. Motoa is engaged In the Caulfield Cup with 8.1, and in the Melbourne Cup with 8.4.

War Song, which won the Nursery Handl, cap on the concluding day of the Napier Park meeting, is by Royal Fusilier — Cantatrlce, and half brother to Merlgal, which won the same event last year. The latter filly is now located at Flemington, in charge of W. Kennedy. Although Mr. E. J. Watts’ horses. Musketry and Wimmera, have been allowed to drop out of their engagements In the City Handicap, the Hawke’s Bay sportsman will evidently be represented at our Spring Meeting, for Maori King. Bally Shannon, and Winning Post figure amongst the nominations in the minor events. That racing is at present flourishing in Auckland is evidenced in a glance at the nominations received by the A.R.C. for their Spring Meeting. The whole of the events have filled beyond the most sanguine expectations, and the total for all the races is 71 in advance of last year. The fact that there are very few outsiders nominated makes the list all the more remarkable. Son-of-the-Marsh, which hoisted a fresh Australasian record for a mile and a-quar-ter when he won the Final Handicap at Randwick on Saturday* is an English bred horse by Wildfowler -- Loo’s Pride. Last season he only scored once out of five starts, when, with 10.1 in the saddle, he won the Club Welter at the City TattersaH’s Meeting, running the mile iu 1.40. Mr W. Casey has started the job of extending the People’s Stand at Ellerslie, which is to be lengthened about 50ft. A number of seats have also been purchased, which it is stated will be placed under the trees for the use of the outside patrons. This is a step in the right direction, and is evidence that the club intend studying those who are compelled to view the racing from the outside. It is a distinct novelty to find a country club giving more in stakes than the Metropolitan Club of its own district. Such is the case, however, with regard to the Stratfoid Club, which has drawn up a programme for its annual summer fixture on January Ist and 3rd, "when stakes aggregating £1155 will be distributed. This is £55 in excess of that allocated by the Taranaki Jockey Club for its Christmas meeting. A funny incident is reported from the North. A Maori wishing to nominate his horse at one up-country meeting about thirty miles from where he resided sent the secretary a wire to nominate the horse. A few hours afterwards the secretary was surprised to see the Maori owner walk into his office and ask if he had received the wire. The Maori had ridden the thirty miles in order to make sure that the wire had reached Its destination. The most noticeable absentee from the two-year-old events at the A.R.C. Spring Meeting is the Soult —Miss Annie filly Antoinette. All going well in the meantime Antoinette is to be shipped South to-mor-row week by the Rarawa, and will tackle the cracks at the C.J.C. Spring Meeting. Mr. Arnold is evidently not frightened by the form shown by the Southern two-year-olds at Hastings, and it is to be hoped the filly will succeed iu the hard task set her. The Otahuhu Trotting Club advertise the programme for their Spring Meeting, which is fixed for November 17 and 20. The added money for the two days totals £725, the principal events being the Otahuhu Spring Trot of 75sovs and the Su burban Trot of 65sovs. A pony race figures on the programme on each day. the prize money being of the value of 50sovs each. Nominations for all events close with the Secretary (Mr. F. D. Yonge> on the 29th inst. at 9 p.m. The “West Australian” is responsible for the statement that after Annapolis had wou the Kalgoorlie Cup, an offer was telegraphed to “Tommy” Burns, asking the ex-world’s champion, boxer to put a price on the halfsister to Annapolis recently purchased by him in New Zealand. Burns, who paid 200 gs for the daughter of Soult, asked HOOgs for her, a price which had the effect of bringing negotiations to a close immediately, uo deal being likely to eventuate on these terms. The performance of Bobrikoff in winning the Railway Handicap on the opening day of the Napier Park meeting must be recorded as one of the best Mr Lowry’s black demon hate yet registered. Although loaded with 10.4, and. conceding from a stone and two pounds to three stone eight pounds, Bobrikoff managed to defeat the opposition, covering the journey in a tick over fourteen. Last year Bobrikoff won the same race with 9.6 in the saddle, but took 1.17 2-5 to traverse the distance. Finland’s brilliant son is engaged in the Champion Plate at Wellington on Saturday, and his meeting with All Red and Master Soult should be especially interesting. The success of Artillerie in the Caulfield Stakes is some reward for the game manner in which her owners have kept going on the Australian Turf, in the face of many disappointments. season, Artillerie. then a three-year-old, put up several sterling performances, the principal being a third in the Autumn Stakes, w.f.a., over a mile and a-half, after a great fight with two such, noted performers as Trafalgar and Parsee. This season Artillerie contested the Chelmsford Stakes, w.f.a., nine furlongs, at the TattersaH’s Club meeting, running second to Prince Foote. She was then taken to Melbourne, and the Caulfiekl Stakes, which she won, was her first appearance on Victorian soil.

Mr. Morse’s adjustment! for the City Handicap and Manukau Hardies made their appearance well up to time. With Muskerty at the top of the handicap, Mr. Morse was compelled to frame his weights on a light scale. Mr. Morse differs somewhat with Mr. Pollock In the respective merits of Muskerry and Ngapuka, for whereas at Auckland there is 31b between the pair, at Wellington there is a difference of 91b. Lochbuie, at 8.4. is nicely treated, but probably the picks of the handicap are Te Aroha 7.13, W’aimangu 7.7, Tauekaha 7.4, Santa Rosa 7.2, and Rauparaha 7.0. The latter is exceptionally well treated on fits past performances, but the handicap is altogether a flattering one. The Auckland Metropolitan Committee held their usual monthly meeting last week, the Hou. E. Mitch else n presiding. The following programmes were submitted and approved: Matapouri Amateur Sports Club, December 23; Paengaroa Hack Club, January 1; Whangarei Racing Club. January 7 and 8; Takapuna Jockey Club, season 1909-10; Alexandra races, December 27; Otamatea Racing Club, January 14; Waioeka Jockey Club, February 10; Matamata Racing Club, February 10; Ngaruawahia Racing Club, January 29; Whakatane Racing Club, March 17; Otahuhu Trotting Club, five pony races, November 17 and 20 and February 6, 10, and 13. The following licenses were granted: Trainers—E. Stewart, Charles Weal (three months); jockeys—A. E. Cox, William Gosnell, Walter James Porter, T. W. Reid, F. L. Speakman (three months); apprentice jockeys— Charles Henry Percival; gentlemen riders— Messrs. C. R. Carter, H. G. Dingle, F. A. Guy, F. P. Selby, W. M. Taylor, H. C. Tonks, L. H. Wynyard. A meeting of the A.R.C. committee was held later, the Hon. E. Mitchelson presiding. Mr. H. T. Gorrie was elected a life member. The following transfers were passed: Mrs. Leonard to T. Burns, brown filly, 2yrs, by Soult—Roxana; F. W. Arnold to Mesdames Foss and Steuart, Excalibur; B. Cunningham to Thomas Cunningham, brown filly, 2yrs, by Soult—Postmistress. Four new members of the club were elected. The following tenders were accepted for the privileges for the season at Ellerslie: Booths, Messrs. Molloy and Adams; fruit stalls, Mrs. Murphy. Mrs. Gallagher was appointed caterer for the spring meeting. Says a southern writer: Some riders take a tumble in a jumping race in a matter of fact manner which creates a mild surprise in those who have never received a toss from the saddle. When Court-martial fell at Geraldine, King of Trumps toppled over him and unshipped C. Sussey, who had the ride on the latter horse. Sussey promptly got on his legs, but Carr was not so fortunate, and. lay in a dazed condition for some moments. Realising that the horses were coming round again, Sussey rolled Carr off the course, and having done so walked away and left him. To some such an action would savour of unfriendly callousness, but there is not much doubt that such an idea never entered Sussey’s mind. Both riders, however, were saved the trouble of walking back, as a motor car was thoughtfully steered round to them. The sad accident which occurred on the opening day of the Napier Park meeting, by which John O’Connell lost his life, removes one of the leading cross-country horsemen of the Dominion. The deceased rider was quiet and unassuming, and for a number of years was first horseman to Mr A.. F. Douglas, riding that gentleman’s horses at Flemington in July last. As the prospects of Mr Douglas’ jumpers being ready to race for some time weie not bright, O’Connell elected to return to New Zealand, and accepted an engagement with Sir Wm. Russell, for whom he was riding when the accident occurred. Deceased leaves a widow and one child, to whom all sportsmen will, I am sure, extend their heartfelt sympathy. Last autumn a brother, W. O’Connel, was killed while riding Stronghold in a hurdle race at Riccarton, and there are still two brothers, “Jerry” and “Joe,'* riding over country. i 4 4 TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH. CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Most of the Riccarton trained horses that competed at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Meeting returned home on Friday A few only came on as far as Oamarm and they will participate in the North Otago Jockey Club's Meeting next week. Full Sail, who won a double at Dunedin Jockey Club’s Meeting, is a most promising three-year-old colt by Pilgrims Progress from Windwhistle. He Is a great galloper, and should add further to his laurels at North Otago Meeting. Whatakura won both hurdle races at Dunedin Jockey Club’s Meeting, and his victories under 11.9 and 12.4 go to prove how deficient the South Island is Just now in even second-rate hurdlers. Countermine, who credited Sir Geo. Clifford with the Dunedin Stakes, can muster up a fair amount of pace, but the Chokebore stable is credited with having two that can beat him for speed. The well-known North Island horseman, R. Young, has been retained by Messrs. W. and G. Stead to do their light-weight riding at the New Zealand Cup Meeting. R. King has ben retained to ride Prim in the New Zealand Cup. Master Soult is still in great demand for the New Zealand Cup, while Ail Red seems to be going out of favour. A fairsized commission was executed in favour of Bobrikoff a few days ago, and he now rules as second favourite. The two-year-old sister to All Red has been named Maddura. The yearling colt by Achilles from Stepka, owned by Mr. J. F. Reid, broke his back at Burnside a few days ago. At a meeting of the Ashburton Racing Club, held on Thursday, for the purpose of considering the Rose Noble-Tiki tere case, the following resolution was carlad: “That the committee of the Ashbur-

ton Racing Club having considered Mr. Pybe’s claim to the third stake in the Ashburton County Handicap cannot see its way to comply with his request, namely, to pay the Rose Noble place money to Tikitere, but confirms the payment of stakes in accordance with the judge’s placing.” It is quite probable that the matter will be taken to the Racing Conference to decide as to whether Rose Noble must carry a penalty of five pounds in the New Zealand Cup or not. The speedy Lupulite Is going very well in his work a£ Wingatui, but he will not be ready to race for a couple of months yet. At the Albury races on Wednesday there was a good attendance, and good sport in spite of the prevalence of a strong wind. The Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase was won by the North Island horse, W. McQlasham’s Baltic, with P. Elworthy’s Barney second, and J. Welstead’s Butterfly third. There were sixteen jumps to negotiate, and this event was the best of the day. Mr J. C. N. Grigg won the Maiden Plate and Welter Handicap with Matamua. The Albury Cup fell to J. Lewis’s Cracroft. The Albury Trot and Chamberlain Trot were both won by F. Stocker’s Pom Pom, and the Flying Handicap was annexed by a Timaru horse, H. A. Glenny’s black filly Buolands. There were eleven bookies at the meeting, licensed at a fee of £3 3/ eachr i i 4 A.R.C.
