- . October 1. At Home. Mrs. and Miss Denniston (Armaghstreet) gave an “at home” in honour°of Miss Rattray (Dunedin). Mrs. Denniston, who received her guests in the drawingroom, was wearing a pretty gown of pale sage green cloth, with vest and sleeves of cream net lace; Miss Denniston, navy blue cloth, made pinafore style, with yoke and sleeves of cream lace; Miss Rattray (Dunedin), tailor-made coat and skirt of olive green cloth, white chip hat wreathed with cream roses and foliage, light fox furs. Afternoon Tea.

On the same day a small tea was given by Mrs. Wardrop at the bank building in Hereford-street for Mrs. Herbert Elworthy, of Timaru. The guests "included: Mrs. J. C. Palmer, Mrs. Allen, Miss Ogle, Miss Fisher, Mrs. C. Reid, Miss MurrayAynsley, Mrs. Hall, and Mrs. T. Cowlishaw. A Dance.

A carpet dance was given by Mrs. Finch at Opawa on Saturday evening. The hostess was charmingly gowned in white taffeta and lace; Miss Finch, cream silk dress, with Empire sash of pale blue; Mrs. Wilding, black silk, richly trimmed with jet; Miss Ned will, gown of reseda green taffeta and net; Miss Wilson, pale

blue eolienne, with touches of pale pink; Miss Devenish Meares, green velvet and cream lace; Miss Symes, an Empire gown of vieux rose silk; Mrs. W. Day, cream satin, relieved with gold embroideries; Miss Hungerford, pale blue silk; Miss Murray, grey satin and sequin trimming. Also present were: Messrs. Wilding, Hesse, Ross, White, Turner, Parkinson, Day, Drs. Ned will, Gribben, and Finch. Flower Show.

A flower show was opened in the Alexandra Hall on Wednesday afternoon. The display of narcissi was very tine, the season having been perfect in all spring flowers. It was kept open again yesterday, when the awards were made for the best decorated tables. Among others present were: Mrs. Wigram, Mist J. D. Hall, Miss Cowlishaw, the Misses Humphreys, Mrs. Wardrop, Mrs. Allan, Miss Ogle, Mrs. T. Cowlishaw, Mrs. Beswick, Mts. Blunt, Mrs. and Miss Pyne.

The Theatre. At the Theatre Royal the Ward Company are having a most successful season, which will be brought to a close to-night. Amongst those attending have been Mrs. and the Misses Humphreys, Mr. and Mfs, Saveli, Mrs. W. and the Misses Moore, Mrs. and the Misses Hamner, Dr. and Mrs. Gerald Russell, Mrs. George Harper, Mrs. and Miss Wilding, Mrs. Andrew Anderson, Mr. and the Misses Secretan, Mrs. and Miss Nanearrow, Mr., Mrs. and Miss Thomas, Mr. and the Misses Way, Misses Guthrie, Merton, and Denniston.

Personal. Mrs. Hansel (Wellington), with her children, are staying with Mrs. Julius, at Bishop’s Court, Christchurch. Mrs. Russell Grace (Wellington) is in Christchurch, staying with Mrs. G. G. Stead, at ‘Strowan Park.” The Hon. Laline Plunket passed through Christchurch last week, en routb for St. Hilda’s, Dunedin. During her stay here she was the guest of Mrs. Boyle, at Rieearton.

Mrs. Miss Nicholls hare returned to Christchurch from Methven, where they were staying with Mrs. Lewin and Mrs. Fowler. Miss Corfe (Christchurch), who has been in England and on the Continent for three years, has returned by the Ruapehu. Mrs. and Miss Pyne (Christchurch) have been staying at Springfield. Miss Izard, who has been visiting friends in Wanganui, has returned to Christchurch.
