July 9. The Canterbury branch of the Navy League held a big gathering in the Victoria Hall, when the Rev. Eliot Chambers (of Lyttelton), Miss Freeman, and Major Hobday were the speakers. They gave most interesting addresses, which were listened to with the greatest attention. The lady members present were Mrs. and Miss Boyle, Mrs. J. D. Hall, Mrs. T. Cowlishaw, Mrs. H. Aeland, Mrs. Blunt, Miss Thomas, Mrs. Morton Anderson, Mrs. Ollivier, Mrs. Beals, Mrs. Symes, Mrs. Maxwell, Mrs. Free, Miss Denniston, Miss Neave, Miss Molineaux, Miss Park, Mrs. Cross, Miss Martin, Miss Prins, Miss Fairhurst, the Misses Humphreys and Bloxam. At the close of the meeting a number of new members and associates were enrolled.

On Tuesday evening, Mrs. R. McDougal (Papanui) gave a small farewell party for Mrs. Patterson, who is leaving Christchurch for the North Island.

Golf. On Friday the Hagley Park Ladies* Club played a match on the Shirley links against the Shirley Ladies’ Club. The Shirley team were Mesdames Campbell, Cowlishaw, Day, Borthwick, Boys, Nancarrow, Symons, Misses Reeves, Fisher, Campbell, Wood (2), Rutherford, and Humphreys. The Hagley team were: Mesdames Denniston, Harris, Hall, Lucas, Harley, Murray, Morton, Jennings, Stewart, and Misses Preston, Newton, Cowlishaw, and Cotton. An “ At Home.”

was given by Miss Luxton at her studio in Worcester-street, which was very largely attended. The exhibition of hand-painted china was a very fine one. It included, in addition to the varied and beautiful work done by the artist

herself, several specimens of her pupils’ work. The visit to the studio was moot interesting, the various processes were fully explained, and work in each successive stage was shown in illustration. Amongst the numbers of guests present I noticed: Lady Clifford and her daughter, the Rev. H. and Mrs. Purehas, the Hon. E. C. J. Stevens, Mr. and Mrs. Murray, Miss Croxton, the Misses Snow, Mrs. and Miss Harris, Mr. and Miss Thompson, Mrs. Hunt, Mrs. England, Mrs. Grierson, Mrs. Hall, Mrs. and Miss Wood, Mrs. and Miss Price, Mr. and Mrs. Ross, Mr. and Mrs. Gibb, Mrs. Seager, Miss Lane, Miss Allison, Miss Makeig, Miss Maling, Mrs. and Miss Mclntyre. Visitors to Christchurch include:— Mrs. C. Wilson (Tikau Bay), who is the guest of Mrs. Harley (Armagh-street).

Mrs. Cuthbert Greeson (Tfmaru) ip staying with Miss Greason, at Mrs. D. Macfarlane. y Mrs. H. Acton-Adams (Tipapa). Miss Holmes (Bangor) is the guest at Miss Williams, at Fendalton. Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Knight and Miaf Knight (Racecourse Hill). Mrs. S. Rutherford and Mrs. G- Li Rutherford (Culverden). Mrs. and Miss Grigg (Longbeach). ~ " Mrs. Barton (Featherstone) is th 4 guest of Mrs. H. P. Hill (Papanui). Mr. and Mrs. Bullock (Fendalton) left Christchurch on Thursday for Auckland en route for the Islands’ trip, returning via Sydney. Mrs. Arthur Harper and family, who have been spending some (months iu Christchurch, have returned to Grey* mouth.
