DESCRIPTION OF THE GIFT’S. The striking sacred vessels which have been exciting a great deal of attention while on exhibition in the window of Mr. Kohn. the well known Queen-street jeweller (to whom we are indebted for facilities in reproducing a picture of them* are familiar enough to all Roman Catholics. but a few words of explanation will lie necessary lor readers who belong to other churches. A monstrance is a vessel used at the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, in tin* transparent centre the Sacred Host is placed the monstrance is then mounted on an elevated throne where it may be seen by all the people who kneel ami adore their Saviour in the Holy Eucharist. Ihe monstrance, of which photos are here given, have been donated to the Cathedral by Hi- Holiness the Pope, His Eminence ( ardinal Moran ami His Lord ship Bi-hop l.cnihan. ( iborium is the name commonly given to the "pyx.” o, ‘ v ‘*' iS ‘‘l. in which the Blessed Sacrament is kept. It properly designates the caimpv over the high altar and i- now in Italy applied to signify the little temple in which the Holy Eucharist i- re-erved. but it has been in mo-’- churches to signify the covered cup itself. which contains the -acred specie-. Ihe ciborimii has been presented to St. Patrick-, Cathedral by the Pope. A chalice is the sacred vessel used at Ma— h r tin* wine which is to be con secrated. Ihe rubric- of the missal re quire that it -hollld be of gold or silver, or at lea-t have a -il\er cup gill inside. Bishop and dioeese of Auckland to His Eminence Cardinal Moran, as a souvenir of his visit to New Zealand in February,

1908. It is a magnificent piece of workmanship in metal mosaic and ivory. The figure is of ivory, and the mosaic work

represents St. Peter’s, the Coliseum, and the Forum. The whole stands nearly three feet high on a sexagonal base.
