Decadent East London.
■Dr. Lang, the Archbishop-designate of York, recently made a remarkable speech at the Stepney Council of Public Welfare at Limehouse Town Hall on the decadence of East London.
"In the East End of London we are, by some curious process of civilization, left to ourselves. Those who derive their incomes from houses and streets here do not, as a rule, live in the midst of the people in the East End, and do not co-operate with those who live there. East London is becoming steadily poorer Industries are leaving one by one, and those which take their place are domestic industries with very difficult pro-blems—lower-grade industries, which are the inevitable sign that the bulk of the community is becoming more and more composed of unskilled labourers. “Large numbers of women and girls are taking work at the lowest wages because their husbands and brothers are unemployed.” Jt
