PERSONAL NOTES.

Mr. C. J. Parr is at present on a holiday visit to Okoroire. Mr. W. F. Massey, M.P., left for Wellington via the West Coast on Sunday. Mr. R. L. Stanford, Stipendiary Magistrate, of Wanganui, is about to retire. The Hon. T. Thompson is expected to arrive in Auckland from Gisborne tomorrow.

Mr. C. J. Todd, of the Tourist Department, has been transferred from Rotorua to Wellington.

The death is announced of Mr. V. L. Solomons, a member of the House of Assembly, in his 56th year.

Leave of absence for a few weeks was granted at the meeting of the City Council to Messrs. W. Somers and C. Grey. Mr G. Hogben, the Inspector-General of Schools, is on his way to Auckland. He will’ not return to Wellington for a fortnight. The Hon. J. McGowan, Minister for Mines and Justice, arrived from Wellington on Sunday, aaid proceeded on to Thames by steamer. Mr. W. T. Wood, M.P. for Palmerston North, who has been on a visit to Auckland, was a passenger for the South by the Rarawa on Sunday.

The Rev. Father Duffey, of Auckland, who has been on a visit to the South to recover his health, returned by the Tarawera on Sunday. Mr D. Robertson, secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, has been granted a year’s leave, and will visit Europe on furlough. Tha City Council’s electrical engineer Mi - . A. Wylie) has been granted three Weeks’ holiday leave. He intends to visit Adelaide and Sydney. The Bishop of Stepney, Dr. Cosmo Gordon Lang visits Australasia early in 1909, in furtherance of the Church of England’s Mission to Men. In recognition of 15 years’ service to Rugby football the Dunedin Union Executive presented the retiring president, Mr James Hutchison, with a solid silver flower stand.

The friends of Mr G- Foy, photographer, learn, with deep regret of his death, which occurred at the Waihi Hospital last Friday. The deceased was 33 years of age. Mr Amoldson, of Messrs. Lichtenstein, Arnoldson and Co., who has been travelling in America and on the Continent, returned to Auckland by the s.s. Mokoia, via Sydney.

Mr. C. T. Barriball is to judge in the Lineotu sheep classes at the Poverty Bav show. Mr Barriball then proceds to Palmerston North to act in a similar capacity at the Manawatu show. Dr. Bell, Director of Geological Survey, has returned to Wellington from his extended survey of Whangaroa end Thames districts. He remains there for a week, and then proceeds to Aniseed Valley, Nelson

The Very Rev. Mgr. O’Reilly, who has been recuperating in Auckland for some time past, has now sufficiently recovered in health to resume hie ecclesiastical duties. He will resume charge of his parish at the Thames this week.

Mr. L. F. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, leaves Wellington for London by the Athenic on November sth, under instruutioua from the Government, to bring out a million Atlantic salmon ova and other fish for New Zealand waters. The death is announced of Canon Dodd, of St. PauFs, Dunedin, aged 74. Ho was formerly vicar at Bolclutlia and In the Taleri. Decensed was occupied in tho East Coast mission in 1881-83.

Mr. Witty, member for Riccartou, was

tendered a social last Thursday by the residents of Papanui, which has been severed from his electorate. Mr. Witty and his wife were presented with a silver tea and coffee service and a tray bearing a suitable inscription. Mr. Cecil Walrond. who has been instrumental in saving no less than five lives, has received from the Ponsonby Swimming Club a letter conveying their appreciation of his courageous action, and his splendid record in life-saving work.

When the Waikare arrives at Sydney next week from Wellington Capt. Mcßeth will transfer to the Union Company’s recently purchased steamei’ Paloona (late Hiaddart-Parker Company’s Zealandia), and Captain Stott, who took the Wanaka over, will take command of the Waikare. Captain J. V. Bentley will leave her on arrival at Sydney,, and await instructions.

At the Knox Church, Parnell, on Sunday, at the conclusion of the morning service; the Rev. J. M. Simpson made special reference to the death of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Knox, who bequeathed £70,000 to charities. The deceased lady, he said, had been true to the chureh of her fathers, and had taken a keen interest in its welfare. Knox Church had shared in her benefactions. Her best memorial was in the institutions which would in generations to eome benefit by magnificent bequests. Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Kohn, who were recently married in Auckland, returned from the South on Thursday last. At a banquet at the residence of the Hon. T. Thompson (father of the bride), Mr. Thompson presented Mr. and Mrs. Kohn with the house and grounds. In the course of the celebrations, Mr. LloydDiddams, on behalf of Mr. Kohn’s staff, presented him with a framed and illuminated* address,, which bore the following inscription: — “ Presented to Adolph Kohn, Esq., by his employees, on the occasion of his marriage, 21st September, 1908.” Mr. Kohn suitably responded. Mr. Kohn hag received the following eablegramme from Bishop Lenihan: "Accept my sincere congratulations. Welcome news received letter of to-day. Best wishes to you both. Writing you fully next mail. 1 am well and happy.—Lenihan.”
