PERSONAL NOTES.

The Rev. Canon Nelson returned to Auckland from the South last week. Major G. W. S. Patterson returned from Wellington by the Rnrawa last week. Mr J. A. Grimwood, chief clerk of the Auckland office of the Union S.S. Co., returned from Dunedin last week. Mr F. 11. Wood, of Tauranga, has returned to New Zealand by the lonic from a visit to Japan, India and Great Britain. Mr W. F. Seandrett, of the Invercargill office of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, who has been on a visit to Auckland has returned home. The passengers from Auckland, who left Wellington on Thursday by the Mamari for London, included Miss E. Flood, Messrs. A. McHard, L. Levi, and E. Wheelhouse. Mr. Edward F. Yuile, one of the oldest and best-known bookmakers in NewZealand, died at his residence in Wellington on Tuesday week, after an illness of seme months’ duration, aged 6 7years. The employees of Impey, Ltd., Auckland, presented Mr. J. R. Ellison with a handsome dinner service as a token of esteem on the occasion of his approaching marriage. The presentation was made by Mr. Tlios. Impey. Captain E. A. Downle, who is master of the missing steamer /icon, is said to have been in command of the steamer Boverie when she broke her shaft some years ago on her way from Australia to South Africa with horses. Mr Charles A. Thorne was presented last week by the Auckland Marist Brothers with a valuable marble clock as a mark of esteem on the eve of his approaching marriage. A Press Association message intimates that Mr. Wm. Clark, recently of Scotland, has been appointed mine manager of the Blackball mine, in place of Mr. Walter Leiteh, who has been appointed general manager for the company. Mr A. E. L. Bertling, formerly head keeper of the Zoological Society’s Garden at Regent’s Park, London, and lately chief ranger and gamekeeper for the Tourist Department at Rotorua, has been appointed superintendent of the Newtown Zoological Gardens, Wellington. Out of 37 applications for the Chair of Mathematics, at the Canterbury College, vacated by the resignation of Professor Cook, John Percy Gabbat, M.A., of Nottingham, was appointed at a special meeting of the Board of Governors Mr. Gabbatt has had a brilliant career. The Rev. D. B. Ashford, who has been appointed to succeed the Rev. E. Davidson as minister in charge of the Congregational Home Mission work at Kawhia, has arrived in New Zealand by the lonic (says an exchange). Shortly before leaving England the" Rev. Mr. Ashford was ordained at New Court, Tollington Park. Mr John Jenkins, a member of the Auckland Hospital Board, and formerly chairman of the Arch Hill Road Board, who returned by the lonre to New Zealand from a visit to England, arrived back in Auckland by the Takapuna. Mr. Jenkins, who has been accompanied by Mrs Jenkins, has been devoting much time to Cornwall, among family friends. Mr. 11. L. A. Mackintosh, second officer of the Antarctic expedition ship Nimrod, has made a complete recovery from the effects of the accident whereby he lost an eye when the vessel -was landing stores on the ice in the far South. Mr. Mackintosh has been granted a commission in the Royal Naval Reserve, the Admiralty authorities evidently considering that the loss of his eye will not debar him from performing active service in His Majesty’s navy. Shortly after the return ot the Nimrod from the South, Mr. Mackintosh went to Sydney, to undergo special treatment for his injury, and lie is still in that oitv, but it is understood that he will return to Lyttelton, pro bably in November, to rejoin the Nimrod for her second voyage to the Antarctic.
