GISBORNE.

Dear Bee, August 28. A -moat enjoyable JUVENILE DANCE was held at Mrs. Jex-Blake's residence on Thursday evening last, in honour of her little daughter (Miss Sheila JexBlake). About sixty young guests thronged the rooms, and thoroughly enjoyed the varied entertainment provided for them. The large dining-room made a splendid liallroom, music being provided in the drawing-room, whilst the break-fast-room was utilised for the supperroom. The long verandahs were screened in and prettily lighted with Chinese lanterns; in the rooms, flowers, spring bulbs chiefly, being in great abundance, and most artistically arranged. The tables in the supper-room were decorated with white and yellow narcissi, arranged in tall silver vases, lighted with brass candlesticks, the light shaded by pale yellow shades. A number of grown-ups assisted Mrs. Jex-Blake in the entertainment of the children, amongst the helpers being Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy, Mr. and Mrs. Burke, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Lysnar, Mr. Field, Mrs. Tombleson, Mrs. Mann, Miss Williamson, Mr. and Mrs. Barker, and Misses Barker, Miss Nolan, Mrs. Stephenson, Miss Sherratt, Mrs. A. Rees, Miss Alyraer, Miss Davis, and Miss Pyke. GOLF. On Friday afternoon last the usual yearly competition for a golf stick, presented by Mr. C. A. J. Fenwick, took place, resulting in a win for Miss L. Barker of the stick. Yesterday (Thursday) afternoon a match, Captain's v. Secretary’s teams, took place, resulting in a win for the Captain’s (Mrs. Morgan) team, the defeated side entertaining the victors at afternoon tea. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mrs. Codrington (Sydney) is at present visiting her daughter, Mrs. Dawson Thomas (G isborne). Mr. and Mrs. Murphy, sen., returned last week from a visit- to the Old Country. The Misses Black returned last week from a long holiday in Brisbane, also staying with Miss Fitzsymonds in Sydney. Mr. Tapper, Inspector Bank of New Zealand, was spending a few days in Gisborne last week. On .Saturday last Miss Hoadley (from Napier), Mrs.’ and Miss Ensor (Canterbury), and Hon. Capt. Tucker arrived in Gisborne. Miss Coleman, who was visiting relations in Auckland during Fleet Week, returned to Gisborne on Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Kissling also returning on Sunday from Auckland. Miss Symes, Miss Monckton, and Mr. R. Lanauze arrived in Gisborne from the South on Wednesday last. Dr. Pottinger, who has been in partnership with Dr. Scott for some months, has returned to England. Dr. Pottinger, though only resident in Gisborne a short time, was very popular, not only medically, but socially, and will be missed by his many friends. Miss Rees (Gisborne) is at present visitino her sister. Mrs. Lusk, of Napier.
