Cost of Speed on Atlantic.
The cost of speed on the Atlantic is strikingly shown in a recent issue ot “Engineering,” where full details are given of the performance of the Cunard liner Lusitania, as prepared by Mr. Thomas Bell, of the famous Clyde lirui which built her—Messrs. John Brown and Co., Limited. This cost is due more to the great power required for speed than to any laek of efficiency in the turbine machinery, as the coal (Consumption per horse-power per hour is as low as LfJlli. It is found that the coal for the vpyage of 3100 nautical miles would only be 2080 tons were the speed 15J- knots, of" 3670 tons for 21 knots; but 25 knots requires 5390. An important factor again is the large quantity of hot water used for passenger purposes —in baths, hand-basins, galleys, etc. This increases tile coni consumption at 25-knot speed to ,5-ipo tons, jhe consumption for fulLspecd works out to lllb per 100 nautical' miles .per ton of iispiacenicul. -- - ■
