SWIMMING.

The eighth attempt made by the well-known swimmer, J. Wolffe, to cross the English Channel lias ended in failure, although a distance considerably in excess of that between Calais and Dover was covered. This, in a direct line, is 21 miles, but it was impossible for the swimmer to take a direct course, owing to the influences of wind and tide. After he had swum 36 miles the tide compelled Wolffe to give up. He was then quite close to the French eoast.
