The Troubles of Cyrano.

Charles Bertrand, a mechanic, of Paris, aged 25 years, lost an eye recently because nature has bestowed oil him a nose of phenomenal dimensions. He was ■walking along the Rue Croix-Nivert when a man approached him, and, walking by his side, continued to take an offensive interest in his facial appearance. Bertrand is accustomed to annoyance of this sort, but in this case it was so pronounced that he turned into a cafe to escape it. But the man followed him, and, accosting him peremptorily, demanded what lie meant by going about with such a monument on his face. The owner replied sadly that he .was irresponsible, but the man declared that he was an artist, and would not stand it. He thereupon drew a revolver and fired at the object of his hatred, but aimed so badly that he shot the unfortunate Bertrand through the eye. He was at once arrested, and his victim was removed to the hospital.
