ATHLETICS.

The Olympic Games. Reginald (“Snowy”) Bilker, F. K. Beaiirepane, F. W. Springfield and D. Tartakover have been chosen, after, a trial race, to represent Australasia at the Olympic games in the swimming teams' championship of the world, E. J. Cooke being reserve man. Farmer and Webb, representatives of Britain, were -first and second and A. Kerr, New Zealand, third in the 3500 metres walking match. Time, 14 min 55 secs.-

A. E. N. Rowjands, the other New Zealand representative, was defeated in his heat.

C. iShcpp-.rd, America, won the 1500 metres race in 4 min 3 2-5 see. Lynch, of New South Wales, was beaten in his heat.

J. Flanagan, America, won the ham-mer-throwing contest with a throw of 170 feet.

Tartakover secured a bye in the 400 metres swimming event. Cooke, of New South Wales was beaten in his her.t. Beaurepaire won his heat in 5 min 49 sees.

Sheppard has put up a record for the 1500 metres, the previous best being 4 min 5 2-5 sees, put up by J. P- Lightbody at the Olympiad at St. Louis in 1904. He has apparently beaten Guy Haskins, the Christchurch miler, who was to have represented Australasia in the event. Haskins has beaten Sheppard twice over Hie mile, and on the second occasion the present winner was disqualified for throwing Haskins when he obviously had his opponent beaten. John Flanagan, the Irish-American athlete, has won innumerable field contests. He holds the record for the 161 b. hammer from a 7 ft. circle, the distance being 172 feet 11 in. On July 16, in Hie '4OO metres swimming race, Beaurepaire, of Victoria, easily won his heat. Tartakover, of Sydney, withdrew from the event.

The Canadian House of Commons has voted 15,000 dollars for the expenses of Canadian athletes competing in the Olympic games.

In the final of the 400 metres swimming championship 11. Taylor (England) beat F. E. Beaurepaire (Victoria) by live yards, in 5 min. 36 4-5 sees.

G. E. L.'.rner and R. Harrison (Britain) beat A. Ker - (New Zealand) in the' 10 miles walk. Larner won in 78 min. 19 secs. Kerr’s time being 78 inin. 40 sees.

Beaurepaire won his heat in the 100 metres swimming race. Tartakover getting second in another heat.

Kerr was scratched in the final of the 10 miles walk, which was won by ? Lai‘nei‘ in lb. 15m. 575., establishing an amateur record. Britain has secured "0 wins at the Olympic games. America is second on tho list with 9 wins, Sweden third with 5, Norway and Germany have each two wins, and Canada, Belgium. France and Italy one each. The series of banquets, receptions, and competitions will be continued throughout the week. 26-Hours' Walking Match Tn a 20-hours’ walking match, Johanson, a New Zealander, covered 111 miles in 24 hours 22 minutes, winning the contest. The other competitors dropped out by the time, the distance walked by Johanson had been reached, and he was accordingly declared the winner.
