High Price for James I. Silver
The high price of £4200, or £46 13/4 an ounce, was obtained at Christie’s, London, the other day, for a very rare and beautiful old James I. gilt rosewater ewer and dish.
It was only after a long and spirited duel between Mr. Crichton and Mr. Harding that the two pieces were secured. The former started with a bid of I £5OO, whjch his opponent instantly doubled. Then the price was gradually raised by £5O bids to £2OOO, and afterwards by £lOO bids to £4OOO.
Here a long pause took place, but ■while the auctioneer’s hammer was still poised in the air another £lOO was called by Mr. Harding. This was capped iby Mr. Crichton, and at £4200 he was declared the winner.
Three years ago a similar ewer and dish changed 'hands for £4050 at tho great Huth sale, while the King is known to possess a very beautiful drsh of the same kind at Windsor Castle.
