Dear Bee, June 5. THE ORC IIESTRAL SOCIETY gave the first concert of the season at the Opera llou>e on Tuesday night last. As is usual, the attendance was very large, which must be most gratifying to Mr. Coheir, the conductor. The local soloists wore: Mrs. Bath, who sang, “My inothei bids me bind my hair” and “Oh! tin' merrj frost-time.” and in response to an enthusiastic encore, “A May morning.” Mr. Wright, of Dannevirkc, gave as his first number, “The Last Man,” and later. “Call me back”; as an encore he sang “ I lie Mighty Deep.” A ’cello solo by Mr. Frank R. Johnstone was quite the most popular item on the programme, and he had the honour of a double encore. Another popular item was a violin solo. ’Scene du Ballett,” by Mr. Somerville Brown, a recent arrival from London. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. Somerville Brown and Mr. Gunter. Miss Ganstad playing the orchestral accompaniments. Miss Porter was mainly responsible for the arrangements, which were perfect. The supper was particularly attractive, and the floor of the Foresters’ Hall is .quite celebrated for dancing. The chaperons were Mrs. Fuller, Mrs. Re.nell, Mrs. A. E. Gibbons, Mrs. Pickett, Mrs. Eliot and Mrs. J. Waldegrave. Mrs. Fuller wore a black silk toilette and pale blue cape; Mrs. J, Waldegrave, a lovely eream silk frock with broad panel of cream lace down front of skirt, same lace trimming corsage; Mrs. Renell, white muslin and lace, touches of pink on corsage; Miss Porter wore a becoming white embroidered muslin frock; Miss Collins, a pretty pink muslin trimmed with white lace, pink ribbon threaded through hair; Miss Smith, cream silk, lace and tangerine ribbon trimming the bodice; Miss Bell, white muslin and lace, pale blue silk belt and ribbon in hair; Miss T. Bell, pink muslin, the bodice effectively trimmed with white lace; Miss M. Hayward, cream and pink floral muslin, a deeper shade of pink silk trimming bodice; Miss Ida Hayward, cream silk ami lace, cluster of scarlet flowers on bodiqe; Miss Macintyre, a pretty cream satin frock: Miss Armstrong, cream silk and lace; the Misses Robinson, etc. . AT THE HOKOWHITU LINKS on Friday last. Miss Slack and Miss I. Russell won the prize presented by Mrs. Warburton for a ladies’ foursome match. Mrs. W. L. Fitzherbert and Miss Monro coming second. On Tuesday afternoon the President’s medal handicap was won by Mrs. Louisson. Mis. L. A. Abraham and Mrs. Monro third. The junior medal was won Uy Mrs. P. Sim, Mrs. 11. Waldegrave’coming second. PERSONAL NOTES. Mrs. and Miss Cotter (Greytown) are the guests of Mrs. E. Armstrong, Palmerston. Mr. and Mrs. H. Manson (Melbourne) spent last week in Palmerston. They were the guests of Mrs. Coombs. Miss Frances Waldegrave (Palmerston ), has gone to visit friends in Christchurch.
