GISBORNE.

Dear Bee, March sth. THE CROQUET TOURNAMENT, between Whataupoko and Kaiti, held last Saturday, passed off most successfully, and resulted in a win for Whataupoko. It was a beautiful afternoon, and the lawns, owing to the recent rains, looked beautifully green, and in excellent condition. Up till 4.30 all the lawns were utilised for croquet, no tennis being played. At 4.30 a semi-final tennis match in connection with the tournament was played, Miss De Latour and Mr. Fenwick being defeated by Miss Black and Mr. Matthews. There were a great number on the lawns. The Misses Blaek and Miss Boyland gave tea, and the table was daintily decorated in pale yellow and white. I shall not describe the dresses to you, as almost without exception white was worn. A number of small evenings have been given FOR DR. AND MRB. MORRISON, who have left Gisborne for a year’s tour in England and on the Continent,

THE ANNUAL POLO TOURNAMENT, under the auspices of the Poverty Bay Polo Association, was commenced at Makauri on Thursday. The weather up till 2.30 p.m. was everything that could be desired, but a heavy downpour then considerably damped the proceedings, causing consternation amongst the very numerous lady onlookers, radiant in muslins and the lightest of summer frocks. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. W. G. Sherratt. Mrs. Sherratt was assisted by her daughters, and a capable band of very willing assistants. The first match was played between Poverty Bay I. and 11. teams in the Open Cup competition, the teams being as follow: —No. I.: J. R. Murphy (Capt.), R. R. Sherratt, T. Sherratt, and E. Monckton. No. II.: F. E. Gillingham (Capt.), J. Monekton, G. Black and E. Gray. The No. I. team had the advantage all through tlie game, and proved more than equal to their opponents, eventually winning by 23 to 0. The senior game was between Mangaheia No. I. and Waipiro. Soon after this game commenced, rain set in, which made things very unpleasant. The Tournament will be continued to-morrow (Friday), ending up with a ball at night, of which I hope to tell you something next week. SOME PURELY PERSONAL ITEMS.
