Dear Bee, February 27. A very successful X BACHELORS’ BALL was given at Waimata last Saturday evening, the night, fortunately, being very fine. A small party went from Gisborne, consisting of Mrs. Tombleson, the Misses Sherratt (2), Misses Williamson (2), Miss De Latour, Miss MacLaurin, Messrs. O. Sainsbury, Barron, N. Mair, R. Nolan, C. Williams (Muriwai). The dance was held in the hall at Waimata, the varandah, with the aid of a marquee, forming a pleasant supper-room. The supper table looked very dainty, the prevailing shade in the decoration being pale yellow. Mrs. Branson and Mrs. Kenway had a number of the guests invited staying with them. A FEW OF THE DRESSES worn were: Mrs. Branson, dainty gown of white silk, trimmed with silver passementerie; Mrs. Howard Kenway, very pretty dress of soft pale green silk, made very full in the skirt, the bodice finished with deep folded belt of the silk; Mrs. Tombleson, cream silk and lace; Mrs. Watson, black merveilleux silk, trimmed with chiffon; Miss Jameson (Scotland), black silk; Mrs. B. McPhail, black silk; Miss De Latour, white silk and lace; Miss MacLaurin, dainty white muslin; Miss Williamson, white mousseline de soie, with lace; Miss M. Williamson, long-trained gown of black silk net over silk; Mias Rutledge, soft gown of pink crepe de chine; Mias Carter, white silk and chiffon; Miss B. Sherratt, yellow silk, with touches of black; Miss K. Sherratt, soli white silk muslin; Miss H. Johnston, white silk and lace. TENNIS AND CROQUET. At the Whataupokn Courts on Saturday afternoon the final in the Ladies'

Handicap Singles in connection with the Tournament was played between Misses A. De Latour and B. Bradley, resulting in a victory for the former. In the semi-finals in .the Croquet* Tournament, Mrs. Kels and Mr. Carmichael defeated Mrs. Carmichael and Mr. Matthews. At the Kaiti Courts a match was played between Mr. Barlow and Mr. Margoliouth, the final for tlie Hawley Cup. The match lasted three and a-half hours, and, unfortunately, owing to indisposition on the part of Mr. Barlow, could not even then be finished, so has to be played over again on the coming Saturday. SOME PURELY PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Lysnar returned from Wellington on Saturday. Hon. O. Samuel, of Taranaki, with Mrs. Samuel, arrived from the South on Saturday. ' They proceeded north by last Wednesday’s boat. ■ ■ 1 ■ - Mr. Aiken, one of the Union Co.’s inspectors, who has been spending a few days in Gisborne, left for Auckland last Saturday. Mr. H. J. Blow (Under-Secretary for Public Works) who has been on a visit of inspection to the Gisborne railway, passed on to Auckland on Saturday. Dr. Bell (Government Geologist) arrived in Gisborne to-day (Thursday). Mr. Max Jackson (Gisborne) left for Napier on Sunday. Miss Jameson (Scotland) is at present staying with Mrs. Watson (Waimata, Gisborne). Mr. A. L. D. Fraser, M.P. for Napier, arrived in Gisborne yesterday in connection with the special sitting of the xai Rawhiti Land Board. Archdeacon Williams (Gisborne) returned from a short trip to Napier last Wednesday. Dr. Williams (Dunedin) arrived from t.:e South yesterday, Mr. and Mrs. Pavitt (Gisborne) returned from the North yesterday.
