BRITISH BY-ELECTIONS.
The by-election for South Leeds, caused by the death of Sir J. Lawson Walton (Attorney-General), resulted as follows: Mr. Middlebrook (Liberal) 5274 Mr. Neville (Conservative) 6915 Mr. Fox (Labour) 1451 Mr. Baldwin, Conservativ ‘ member for the Bewdley division of Worcestershire, died suddenly yesterday. At the general election he had a 3,200 majority over the Liberal candidate, Mr. G. R. Benson. [There is some doubt as to the figures in the South Leeds election, owing to the difference in the totals as compared with the general elections return, the order of the names and the remarkable drop in the Labour vote. Mr. Neville’s figures come queried. At the general election the figures were: —Sir J. L. Walton, K.C. (Liberal), 6200; Mr. A. Fox (Labour), 4030; Sir H. W. R. Fairfax-Lucy (Conservative), 2126.]
