AUCKLAND PROVINCE. f 'Archbishop Redwood arrived in Auckland from the South on 15th inst. The Ven. Archdeacon Cole has been on a visit to Taranaki. ‘ Mr. Siedwright (Gisborne) has gone South on a visit. Mr. F. J. Lysnar (Gisborne) is on a visit to Auckland. Miss Boylan (Gisborne) has returned from Canterbury. Mrs. Sherratt, the Misses Sherratt '(Gisborne) has returned from Napier. Mr. and Miss Monckton are back in .Gisborne from the South. Miss Christophers (Gisborne) has returned from Wanganui. Mr. Agnew Brown and Miss Agnew •Brown (Gisborne) are on a visit to 'Napier. The Hon. H. Mossman arrived in 'Auckland by the Rarawa from the South on 15th inst. Mr. and Mrs. N. D. Lysnar, of Gisborne, have been on a visit to Wellington. Captain, Mrs, and Miss Read were passengers by the Monowai for Dunedin on 15th inst. Rev. H. Nelson Wright has left Gisborne to take up his new work in (Christchurch. A Press Association cable states that the Town Clerk of Sydney (Mr. Thomas p. Nesbit) is a passenger by the Maheno for a second holiday in New Zealand. Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds, the Misses Reynolds (3), of Gisborne, have left on an extended tour to England and thq Continent. Miss Murray Aynsley (Christchurch), .who has been staying with Mrs. Palmer at Whatatutu (Gisborne), has left for the South. Mrs. T. Cotter and Miss Winnie Cotter, of “Oaklands,” Remuera, returned to Auckland by the Manuka on Sunday after a pleasant visit to Dunedin. Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, M.P., who has been on a visit to Auckland, returned to Wellington by the s.s. Rarawa on 16th inst. Mr. A. R. Gilbey, of the firm of Messrs. ,W. and A. Gilbey, London, who is visiting the Dominion, left Auckland for Wellington on the 16th inst. Professor Brown, of the Auckland University, accompanied by his two daughters, returned by the Manuka on February 16th. Mr. T. L. Roberts, who went South from Gisborne to manage a property near Oamaru, has taken up land in Hawke’s Bay, and intends settling there permanently. A very old resident of Onehunga, Mr. Patrick Healey, died last week at the advanced age of 77 years. Deceased was formerly a member of the 25th Foot regiment, and had resided in Onehunga for the past 40 years. Mr. James Bennett, Railway Inspector, was presented by his friends, prior to his departure for the South, with a handsome gold watch and silver-mounted umbrella, Mrs. Bennett being the recipient of a gold muff chain. The Premier and party visited the .Waikato Sanatorium on February 16th, and left Cambridge for Hamilton by motor car next morning. On arrival at the latter place. Sir Joseph Ward performed the opening ceremony in connection with the new Public Library, and was afterwards entertained at a garden party by the people of the town. His Excellency the Governor, Lady Plunket and suite, who were to visit Kawhia on Thursday, were unable to do bo owing to the smoke from bush fires obscuring the entrance to the harbour. Tire receipt of the news from New Plymouth, where his Excellency arrived on Friday, caused considerable disappointment in Kawhia, where all preparations for a suitable reception had been made. Recent callers at the Government Tourist Inquiry Bureau have been Mr. A. Freebaim (Sydney), Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Macaush (Queensland), Miss J. K. Crow i Dunedin), Mr. E. H. At Messrs. Sharland’s Pharmacy, Auckland, on February 17th, Mr. S. Smith, late president, was presented by Mr. P. Mackay, on behalf of the members of the Northern Pharmaceutical Association, with a gold sovereign case and a silver matchbox as a mark of esteem. Mr. Smith, who has for a number of years managed the business of Sharland and Co., is leaving for Christchurch to act as traveller for Messrs. G. W. Bennet and Co. Dr. Tutera Wi Repa. who has been selected by the Inspector General of Hospitals for the position of house surgeon of the Gisborne Hospital, is a Te Aute young man, who comes from the Bay of Plenty. He has occupied a similar position on the staff of the Dunedin hospital for some time, and is regarded as a fairly able and promising young representative of the Native race. Amongst the recent visitors at the Royal Hotel have been Mr. C. J. McPhee (Wanganui), Miss J. Ellingham, Mr. N. T. Gold (London), Mr. G. Simpson (England), Mr. J. Edmunds (London), Mrs. Robson (England), Mr. J. E. Melvin (Melbourne), Mr. C. McKechnie (Glasgow), Mr. W. J. Holmes (Perth), Mrs. and Miss Ryan (Sydney), Mr. W. 8. Short (Wellington), Miss Pownall (Wellington), Mr. J. Fyfe (Brisbane), Mr. E. Spicer (Sydney), Mrs. and Mrs. A. Frcebairn (Sydney), Mr. S. Caines (Sydney). Mr. Alex. Lowrie, assistant town clerk, in forwarding his resignation to Auckland City Council, said his health had not been good lately, and he had been offered a position which he hoped would tend to improve it. He asked to be relieved of his duties in a month. The application was granted, and it was decided to call for applications for the position at £250 a year. Mr. A. B. Herrold, draughtsman, tendered his resignation from March 1, as he had accepted another appointment elsewhere. In noting the resignation, the City Engineer eulogised Mr. Herrold’s work. The resignation was accepted. The induction of the Rev. J. M. Simpson, B.A. (late of Winton, Southland) to the charge of Knox Church, Parnell, took place last week before a large congregation. The Rev. G. B. Monro presided, and in the course of his opening address, congratulated the congregation on securing Mr. Simpson for the work in the charge. The Rev. A. C. Wedderspoon addressed the minister, and the Rev. R. L. Walker, the congregation. The choir, under the directorship of Mr. J. F. Bennett, rendered several beautiful anthems in an admirable manner. Mr. Simpson commenced his ministry on Sunday, 16tb inst. Mr. R. G. Veatch, of the United States Geological Survey, who has been in Wellington, studying the New Zealand eoal land laws and their development, arrived in Auckland by the Mokoia on February 16th. He will finally leave the Dominion for Vancouver on the 19th inst., and expects to be back in Washington by about March 20th. Since September 24th last, when he left on his mission, he has gone right round the Australasian States. He is suplying President Roosevelt with separate . reports on the conditions in each State, as well aS a general summary to cover the lot. HAWKE’S BAY PROVINCE. Mr. and the Misses lloadley, of Napier, are absent in Wanganui for a few weeks. The Bishop of Waiapu has returned to Napier from a visit to Gisborne. Miss Montieth, of Woodville, is the guest of Mrs. H. Hill, Napier. Mr. John Roberts, of Dunedin, is in Napier for a few days. Mrs. Brabant has returned to Napier after a few weeks in Auckland. Mrs. Rodie and family, who have been absent in Auckland, are back in Napier. Miss Anderson, of Napier, has been on a holiday visit to Auckland. Dr. ix-ahy is absent from Napier on a three weeks visit to Sydney. Dr. and Mrs, Ronald, who have been some weeks in Taii|H>, have returned to their home in Napier.

Mrs. H. Donnelly, who has been in Napier for a few days, has returned to her home in Platea. Miss Neville, who has been on an extended visit to New Plymouth and Auckland has returned to Napier. Mr. and Miss Fenwick returned to New Zealand by the Nerehana, after being in England for six months. Miss Campbell, of Auckland, is spending some weeks with Mrs. A. B. Campbell, Napier. Mrs. H. B. Lusk and family have returned to Napier after spending the Christmas holidays in Gisborne. TARANAKI PROVINCE. Nurse McAllum, of New Plymouth, is visiting Auckland. Mrs. G. Kebbell, of New Plymouth, is visiting friends at Plimmerton. Mrs. Reg. Bayley, of New Plymouth, is on a visit to Stratford. Miss I. Carrington, who has been visiting Stratford, has returned to New Plymouth. Miss Marchant has returned to Titnaru after spending some weeks with her relations at New Plymouth. Dr. and Mrs. McCleland, who have been on a visit to Auckland, have returned to New Plymouth. Captain N. R. D. Cornwall, of the s.s. Kaipara, is visiting his mother, of New Plymouth. Mr. Stowe, of . the Bank of New Zealand, New Plymouth, has been visiting his relations in the South. Mr. and Mrs. A. Standish, of New Plymouth, have returned from their travels on the Main Trunk line. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. S. Medley have returned to New Plymouth from their honeymoon trip to the Cold Lakes. Mr. Easther, of the National Bank, New Plymouth, has returned from his holiday in the South Island. Mr. A. Hanna, of the N.SB. Coy.’s Office, Auckland, has been transferred to New Plymouth. Mrs. E. T. Morsehead, who has been on a visit to the South Island, has returned to New Plymouth. Mr. Stevens, Inspector of Post Offices for the North Island, who has been relieving Mr. Chaney, C.P.M., New Plymouth, has resumed his duties in the Taranaki district, Mr. G. O. Waddy, who has been promoted to the position of manager of the Union Bank of Australia, Blenheim, has left New Plymouth to take up his new duties. WELLINGTON PROVINCE. Miss Einpson. of Wanganui, has returned from her holiday in Hawke’s Bay. Miss Cox, of Christchurch, is staying in Wanganui with relations. Mrs. Peake, of Wanganui, left last week for a visit to Cambridge. Mrs. Porritt, of Auckland, is the guest of Dr. and Mrs. Porritt, in Wanganui. Mr. and Mrs. Rennell, of Auckland, are spending some months in Wanganui. Mrs. Coverdale, of Christchurch, is staying in Wanganui with Mrs. Hawken. Mrs. W. E. Woods (Wellington) is leaving for England by the next steamer. Mrs. and Miss Grundy are back in Wellington after a long absence abroad. Miss Wylie has returned to Wellington after a stay up North. Mr. Broad, of Westport, is the guest of his sister, Mrs. John Stevenson.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnston, of Wanganui, are staying in Christchurch. Mrs. Lambert, of Wunganui, has returned from her visit to Hawke’s Bay. Mrs. Bowerbank is back in Wellington after a trip South. Mrs. Cave, of Waverley. has been staying in Wanganui with Mrs. Stewart. Mrs. Greig, of Auckland, who Ims been staying in Wanganui with friends, has returned to her home. Mrs. and Miss Mason, of Wanganui, have returned to their home after a long visit to New Plymouth. Miss Moore, of Wanganui, has returned from her visit to Christchurch and Wellington. Mrs. and Miss Steve '•son, of Wanganui, left last week for Dunedin, where they are the guests of Mrs. Carew. Mrs. Rochfort. of Eltham, is staying in Wanganui with her mother, Mrs. A. Lewis. Mrs. Waterfield, who has been living in Wellington for some months, has gone to Auckland. Miss Aline Devin (United Stites), who is travelling about New Zealand, is at present making a May in Wellington. Mrs. John Blundell and Miss Blundell have gone for a trip to Auckland and the Hot Lakes. The Hon. Mrs. Ogilvie Grant is back in Wellington after a visit to her relations in the South Island. Mrs. Willis (Greatford) was in Wellington lately staying with her daughter, Mrs. Duncan Menzies. The Rev. T. H. and Mrs. Sprott are back in Wellington after a holiday spent at Seatoun. Mrs. Harold Johnston (Wellington) has been visiting Mrs. Stead, Christchurch for a few days. Miss Flora Brandon (Wellington) is going for a trip to England in April. She ■will travel by way of Sydney and Suez. Mr. and Mrs. Chatfield (Island Bay, Wellington) have gone South for a trip to the Cold Lakes. Miss Cresswell, who has been in Wellington staying with her sister, Mrs. Waterfield, has gone to Christchurch for a visit to relations. Mr. and Mrs. Baiconibe Brown are back in Wellington from the Upper Hutt, where they have been staying since their return from England. During her stay in Wellington, Mrs. Robert Brough was the guest cf Mr. and Mrs. Prouse, at “Crieklewood,” Clifton Terrace. Mrs. Ballantine (New Guinea) is in New Zealand for a visit. At present she is staying nt the Lower Hutt (Wellington) with her sister, Miss Jenncss. Miss Whitson (Dunedin) who has been in Wellington recently, staying with Mrs. Ross, was a passenger to England by the Wairaate. Mrs. Hewitt, who has boon in Wellington staying with her parents, Colonel and Mrs. Webb, for some weeks, has returned to Opotiki again. Mr. Vincent Ward, second son of the Right Hon. Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, is on his way to England, where he will spend two or three years in London gaining business experience. The Right Rev. Dr. Wallis, Bishop of Wellington, has left for one of his periodic trips to the Ohl Country. In England lie will be joined by Mrs. Wallis, who preceded him some months ago, and they return to New Zealand in a year.

A Press Association telegram reports the death, at Wellington, of Dr. W. B. Tripe, aged 80. About five months ago deceased met with an accident, and had throe jibs broken, but the immediate cause of death was influenza. Mrs. Logan, who has been away in England for the past year or more, has returned to Wellington again. Much sympathy is felt for her is her bereavement, as Dr. Logan was taken seriously ill in England, and died quite suddenly. Mr. J. F. Mills and Dr. Elizabeth Platts-Mills arc back in Wellington after a round-the-world trip lasting just a year. From New Zealand they went to Australia en route to the East, where they made a long stay in Japan. Canada was next visited, and from there they went on to England, travelling a good deal in taht country and Scotland before going abroad. Some weeks were spent on the Continent, then they joined the steamer for Australia, coming on to New Zealand' by the Marama. They have now settled down again at their own house in Karori. SOUTH ISLAND. Miss de Latour (Dunedin) is staying with Miss Deans at Riccarton. Mrs Maurice Denniston (Wellington) is the guest of Mrs Denniston at Opawa. Mrs and the Misses Bettington (Sydney) have left Christchurch for the Southern Lakes. Miss E. Gollan (Hajvke’s Bay), who has been the guest of Mrs Vickerman at Lyttelton, returned home last week. Mr and Mrs Alister Clarke (Melbourne) are staying with Mrs Wardrop, Hcreford-street, Christchurch. Mrs Harold Johnstone (Wellington) is the guest of Mrs G. G. Stead, at “Strowan.” Lady Clifford (Stoneyhurst) is spending a few weeks at her residence, Fendalton, Christchurch. Miss Bell (Wellington) and Miss Dennistoun (Peel Forest) are the guests of Mrs P. Campbell, at Park-terrace (Christchurch). The ‘’Dunedin Star” reports that Mr. J. Henderson, of Dunsandel, has definitely decided to contest the Selwyn seat in the Liberal interest at the General Election. The departures from Christchurch this week include: Mr and Mrs Inwood, Miss Latter, Mrs R. D. Thomas, and Miss G. Thomas for England; Mrs Henry Acland and Miss Watson for Sydney; and Miss Size, who has returned to Dunedin. The Rev. C. 11. Laws, 8.A., pastor of Trinity Methodist Church, Dunedin, is payig a visit to Aucklad to attend the sittings of the annual conference. On the rising of the conference, Mr. Laws departs for Sydney, thence going to the Holy Land, the Continent and England, returning to Dunedin about the middle of next January.
