A pleasing ceremony took place at the office of Messrs. Carr, Pountney and Co. last week, when Mr Guy Pierce, who has been associated with the firm for the past ten years, was presented with a handsome travelling portfolio, suitably inscribed, on the occasion of his departure from Auckland for a trip to England. At the meeting of the Agricultural Association last week, Mr. E. Hall, secretary, asked for leave of absence to enable him to recruit his health, and to gain additional information relative to agricultural matters. It was decided to grant the request, and to refer the details in connection with a locum tenens to the Finance Committee. Mr George George, director of technical education, leaves for Great Britain, via the United States of America, on the 19th inst. During his absence Mr George will study the latest English and Continental educational methods. Mr Darnell Smith, assistant director, will fill Mr George’s position while the latter is absent from the Dominion. Amongst the passengers by the Hauroto from the Islands last week was the Hon. F. D. Cheshire, United States Con-sul-General and Inspector of Consulates for the Far East and the Islands. Mr. Cheshire intends to visit Rotorua, and at the end of the fortnight . leaves for Tahiti. He re-visits New Zealand before returning to headquarters in China. Last week a number of members of the Northcote Anglican Ladies’ Guild met at the residence of Mr. H. H. Hunt to make a presentation to the Rev. A. F. and Mrs. Smith, who leave for England on a tewelve months’ visit, this week. On behalf of the members, Mrs. Hunt handed to Mrs. Smith a travelling bag, and to Mr. Smith a travelling rug and a writing portfolio. The Rev. J. M. Simpson, of the Presbyterian Ministry, who, after six years’ labour in the Winton district, has accepted a call from Knox Church, Parnell, was last week tendered a farewell social by his congregation in the Southern town. Mr. Simpson was presented with a purse'bf sovereigns and some handsome silver ware by Mr. John Cowie, on behalf of the residents. Several speakers referred in highly eulogistic terms to the work of Mr. Simpson in Winton, and trusted that his labours in that charge would be continued as ably in his new pastorate. Mr. S. E. Greville-Smith, associate editor of the New Zealand " Times ” is at present on a vi-it to Auckland. Mr. Smith made the trip overland from Wellington by the main trunk line, and was impressed by the scenic beauty of the route. Three days were occupied in the journey overland, stoppages being made at Taihape and Taumarunui. The bush scenery, the grandeur of Ruapehu, and the wonderful passages over the viaduets will, in Mr. Smith’s opinion, make the route a favourite one with tourists. The main viaduct, Mr. Smith was informed by the contractor, will be completed within six months. A social was tendered in the Federal Hall last week to Mr John . S. Goodwin by the Auckland branch of the Educational Institute, on the occasion of his retirement on superannuation after service as inspector under the Auckland Education Board since 1879. Some 150 teachers attended the function, others present including Messrs L. J. Bagnall (chairman cf the Board), C. J. Parr (member of the Board), D. Petrie (chief inspector), W. Burnside, M.A. and C. W. Garrard, B.A. (inspectors), and V.' E. Rice (secretary). During the evening a number of musical items, vocal ami instrumental, were tastefully rendered, speeches referring in appreciative terms to the qualities and work of Mr Goodwin being delivered by Messrs Bagnall and Perie. Parker, late tide surveyor at Auckland, was the guest of his fellow officers in the Customs last week, when a suitable recognition of the esteem in which he is held was made on the occasion of his retirement after 42 years’ service. The chief clerk, Mr. Reynolds, on behalf of the staff, presented the captain with a handsome oak and silver liqueur stand, and also handed over to him a set of carvers for Mrs. Parker. Mr. Reynolds referred to the many kindnesses Capt. Parker had shown to his brother officers, who greatly regretted his retirement. He had the sympathy of the whole staff in his recent illness, and one and all were rejoiced to think that he was now progressing along the road to recovery. In reply, Capt. Parker said during the time he was connected with the department his associations with his brother officers had always been of the pleasantest nature. He expressed pleasure at their thoughtful recognition of Mrs. Parker, to whom more than anyone else he owed his return to health. Capt. Parker leaves for Rotorua to-morrow for the purpose of taking a course of baths to complete his recovery. TARANAKI PROVINCE. Mr. James Tolhurst, of Opotiki, is i.t present visiting New Plymouth. Stevens, Acting Chief-Postmaster, who expressed the regret with which the staff said goodbye to Miss Moore. Air. O’Hagan briefly replied on behalf of Miss Moore, and thanked the officers for their handsome presents. • ■

Mr. Silk, of Wanganui, and Mr. A. S. C. Anderson, have gone on a visit to the Chatham Islands. Miss Newcombe, of Wanganui, has returned from her trip to the Southern Lakes. Mrs. Louisson and Mrs. Peach, Palmerston, have just been up the Wanganui River as far as Pipiriki. Mrs. Good, of Hawera, has been visiting her mother, Mrs. Baker, at Gonville, Wanganui. Colonel and Mrs. Wood (Nelson), are spending a week or two in Wellington before leaving for England, where they mean to remain for some years. The Misses Henry are back in Wellington, after a trip to Wanganui and the Hot Lakes. They are leaving for England at the end of this month. Mr. and Mrs. Cockburn-Hood (Wairarapa), are leaving for England at the end of this month. They travel by way of Sydney and Suez on the Mooltan. Mr Haybittie and Mrs Haybittie (Wellington), will be passengers to England by the Marere, for a holiday trip. The Misses Haybittie will accompany them. Mr. F. Townsend and the Misses Townsend are back in Wellington. They have been travelling in England and on the Continent for some time. Mr. and Mrs. Renell, Auckland, who have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. A. Renell, Palmerston, went on to Wanganui last week. Mr. and Mrs. C. Waldegrave and their eldest daughter, Miss Margaret Waldegrave, are leaving in the Corinthic on t trip to England, writes our Wanganui correspondent. The Misses Simpson, who have been visiting the Misses Preece, Palmerston, for some weeks, returned to Christchurch last week. The Hon. H. Butler, of England, has returned to Wanganui from his visit to Wellington, and is the guest of Miss Imlay, Mt. Desert. Mr. and Mrs. Vavasour (Marlborough) and the Misses Vavasour are in Wellington for a short stay prior to going to England, where they will remain for about a year. Miss A. Greenwood (Welington) is going to the Old Country for a trip early next month. Her sister, Mrs. W. Most of the time she spent in England, where her sister, Mrs. Hancock, is living. She also did a good deal of travelling abroad, and returned by way of Sydney and Suez. SOUTH ISLAND. Mrs. H. D. Acland (Christchurch) is leaving for a visit to Sydney. Professor and Mrs. Cook have returned to Christchurch from their trip to England. Mr. A. Humphreys and the Misses Humphreys (Christchurch) have returned from Rotorua. Mr. and Mrs. Ranald Macdonald have returned to Christchurch from their motor trip to Mount Cook. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Reeves ami family (Christchurch) have left for the South, where they propose remaining for a couple of months. Dr. and Mrs. Acland, with their children, and Dr. and Mrs. Thacker (Christchurch) were among the passengers for England by the Athenic. Mrs. and Miss Elworthy (Christchurch) have left for a tour to the Holy Land and Europe. They expect to return to New Zealand in eighteen niontlis time.
