THE FRENCH WARSHIP MEURTHE, ASHORE AT HOWE ISLAND.
It will be remembered that early in October the French warship Meurthe was abandoned in millocean while in tow from Noumea to Sydney, her captain and crew iH-lieving her to Ih- sinking. She afterwards drifted ashore, however, at Lord Howe Island. Already some £6OO or £7(M> worth of salvage has lieen recovered iroin the wreck by the Lord Howe Island people. and this has Ixsn stored on the island landing a settlement of their claim. Jt is understood that the Meurthe was insured for £3OOO when she left Noumea. This was against total loss only, and free of salvage charges.
