Dear Bee, August 30. We have had some glorious spring weather; in faet, the past two months have almost been a succession of beautiful days. All the leading drapers are showing spring and summer millinery, and the different show rooms are bowers of flowers, lovely imported hats, etc. Each and all are crowded daily with ladies eager to make their choice before the best are chosen. Mrs E. ,T. Armstrong. Broad-street, entertained friends at PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE on last Friday evening. Miss Hilda Bell won the ladies’ prize, a silver table-nap-kin ring, and Miss F. Robinson the booby prize, an inkstand. Of the men, Mr Chesney won the most games, and was pro sented with a double inkstand. Mr McCord was the booby. Mr and Mrs C. E. Waldegrave, Mr and Mrs Moeller, Miss Hirtseli, Miss Barclay, Miss Mowlem, the Misses Preece (2), Hell (2), Robinson (2), Reed (2), Nanestad, Messrs Russell, Scott, Smith, Chesney, Roe, McLean, Siggs, and a few others were present.

THE EPIDEMIC OF SURPRISE PARTIES still continues. Mix O. Moeller, Broadstreet was the surprised hostess on Wednesday evening. The dining-room and breakfast-room converted into one room made a large ball-room with a perfect floor. The night was clear and eool, and the verandah, furnished with ehairs, sofas, etc., was much appreciated between the donees. A few bridge enthusiasts played in the drawing-room. Daffodils and other spring flowers were profusely used in the decoration of the different rooms, also on the supper table. The guests included: Mr and Mrs MeKnight, the Misses Fitzherbert, Fookes (New Plymouth), Bell (2), F. Waldegravc, M. Waldegrave, Robinson (2), Gemma], Reed (2), Randolph, Collins, Preece (2), Mowlem, Barclay, Hirtseli, nannestad, Armstrong, Messrs. Smith, Haynes, Waldegrave (2), Chesney, Roe, McCord, Reed,Collins, Giesen, McConnell, Watson, Fitzherbert, Dr. Pope, and a few others. Mrs Moeller was wearing a cream crepe de chine toilette, the bo lice much trimmed with frills of cream ac-cordion-pleated chiffon; Mrs MeKnight fine cream canvas voile, trimmed with cream lace, wide pink floral sjlk belt, cluster of pink roses on corsage; Miss Moeller, black satin skirt, cream silk and lace blouse; Miss Frances Waldegrave, a pretty cream and pink floral muslin toilette, with wide pink silk -belt; Miss Margaret Waldegrave, white muslin and lace, floral silk ribbon in pale shades effectively trimming the bodice, belt and sash of same ribbon; Miss Gemrael, scarlet silk, Maltese lace on bodice, wreath of scarlet flowers in hair; Miss Fitzlierbert, pale green muslin, Paris lace trimming bodice and skirt; Miss Fookes (New Plymouth), a dainty eream silk frock with cream lace and pale pink and blue flowers on corsage, pink and blue floral silk belt; Miss Collins, cream Louissine silk, cluster of crimson flowers on corsage and in hair; Miss Robinson, fine black lace toilette, Maltese lace berthe, pale blue scarf; Miss Frances Robinson, green silk, with wide belt of darker ■shade of green velvet, wreath of pink flowers in hair; Miss Armstrong, black satin, frills of black accordion-pleated chiffon on corsage ami sleeves, cluster of crimson; Miss Randolph, blue silk, with double frills of cream lace on corsage, large single crimson rose; Miss Preece, a pretty pink silk frock, made with folded crossover bodice, pink ribbon threaded through hair; Miss Sheila Preece, cream silk, touches of pale blue on bodice, pal?, bflue ribbon threaded through hair; Miss Reed, black satin, cream lace berthe and duster of violets, same flowers in hair; Miss Alice Reed, pale blue silk, frills of white chiffon on bodice and sleeves, cluster of violets; Miss Mowlem, cream voile, cross-over effect of green silk on bodice; Miss Bell, pink muslin, pink ribbon threaded through hair; Miss Gwen Bell, white muslin and lace, turquoise blue silk belt and sash, blue silk threaded through hair; Miss Nannestad. cream embroidered net over silk; Miss Hirtseli, white muslin and lace. The second qualifying round for th? club championship was played on THE HOKOWHITU LINKS on Saturday. The following eight have qualified:—Messrs J. Strang, W. Strang, V. Harman. A. Barraud. G. Sim, F. H. Cooke, G. Pharazyn, and H. Cooper or H. G. Moore. The two last mentioned have to play off. The Palmerston annual golf tournament commences next week. Amongst those certain to enter are: Arthur Duncan (ex-N.Z.- champion) and Mrs G. Williams (the lady ehanmion of

New Zealand).
