hVCKLAUD PROVINCE.

Mr. Edward Murphy, Gisborne, has left en a visit to Vancouver. Mrs. M. J. Gannon (Auckland) is on a Visit to Gisborne. Miss M. Evans, of New Plymouth’, is at present visiting friends in Cambridge. Mrs. Jones Hally and her daughter, Mrs. A. Gibbons, are on a visit to Auckland. Miss Dyer, of Auckland, is at present staving in Cambridge for the benefit cf her health. Miss Oberlin-Browne, who has been staving for some time in Gisborne, has returned to Auckland.

Miss A. De Latour, who has been spending several months in Dunedin, is back in Gisborne. Mr. W. Callender, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, is on a visit to Auckland. Miss Peacock (Auckland) who is at present in Gisborne, is the guest of Mrs. Cussen. Miss Graham, who has been staying with friends in Gisborne, has returned to Palmerston North. Mrs Fred. Kenderdine, of Auckland, who has been to Rotorua for a change, is at present on a visit to Te Aroha. Mr. and Mrs. Henderson and the Misses Henderson left Auckland by the Mokcia last Monday for Sydney, where they intend residing for some months. Mrs. Armitage and Mr. Hewson Armitage, New Plymouth, who have been visiting Auckland, left on their return to Ibranaki by the Rarawa last week. Mr. and Mrs. Wilfrid Johnstone, “Tong Drive,” Otautau, Southland, who have been paying a short visit to Auckland, left by the Rarawa on Sunday for their Southern home.

Dr. and Mrs. Coates, of Roto-o-rangi, Cambridge, having sold their place, are now living in Auckland. They contemplate a trip Home before settling down again.

The Misses Cohen, who have been visiting Mrs. Arthur Myers and other friends in Auckland for the past month er two, were passengers to Sydney by the Mokoia last Monday.

Great regret is felt at the news that Mr and Mrs G. Runciman are leaving for Gisborne next month, as they are both most popular here, writes our Cambridgi correspondent.

Mr. E. F. Black, Auckland, has resigned his position in the Australian Widows* Fund, and is proceeding for a trip to Sydney and Melbourne by the Mokoia.

The Minister of Education has granted Mr. Hogben (Inspector-General of Schools) an extension of his leave, to enable him to fully investigate the technical teaching in Canada and the United States.

Mr. J. Longton, of the Government Stock Department at Christchurch, who is retiring after seventeen years in the service to take up farming near Christchurch, concluded his duties last week. Mr. A. C-olcott, of Napier, is his successor.

Mr. J. C. Campbell, who was in charge of Exhibition gardens and grounds, and has since been supervising various works at the Exhibition, concluded his duties last week, after two years’ service. He will shortly take up a position in the Agricultural Deparement in connection with orchard inspection. At- the annual meeting of St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, Remuera, last week, special reference was made to the great loss the congregation had sustained in the death of Mr R. B. Heriot, for many years a loyal and devoted elder and superintendent of the Sabbath school. It was decided to ereet a memorial tablet in the church, and an enlarged photograph of the deceased gentleman, presented by the Sabbath scool teachers and scholars, is to be hung in the hall. An old resident of Gisborne, Mr. William Harry Steele, died recently. In 1866 Mr. Steele went to Gisborne from Auckland, to build a house for Captain Bloomfield at Matawhero, and remained in Gisborne. During the Te Kooti rebellion this house was burned down by the rebels, and the spoufihg melted down for bullets. Prior to leaving Auckland Mr. Steele was Provincial Grand Master of the Order of Oddfellows, and also took an active part in volunteering. Mr. John Hay, Commisioner of Crown Lands in Southland, died on Thursday last, August Ist. He had held the office of Commisisoner for six years, and previously had done a Sat amount of survey work in Southd. He was born in 1849, and joined the Government service on May 5, 1867. About 1897 he was appointed chief surveyor for The first illness that he had experienced was an attack of measles a few months ago. He got up too soon, and pleurisy supervened, followed by jaundice. Until a few days ago nobody doubted hie recovery, but eancer of the liver -was diagnosed on Monday.

TARANAKI PROVINCE.

Miss O. Glenn, of Manaia, is on a visit in New Plymouth. Miss B. Cutfield, of Wanganui, is tho guest of Mrs Penn. New Plymouth. Miss B. Knight, of Wanganui, is visiting Mrs Capel, New Plymouth. Dr. and Mrs Walker. New Plymouth, are on a visit to Wellington. Mr Griffiths and Miss Bell Griffith*, of Blenheim, are the guests of Mrs Stacy Griffiths, of New Plymouth. The Rev. J. B. Brocklehurst. at present relieving the Rev. F. G. Evans, of St. Mary’s New Plymouth (the latter and his wife being at present in England), has been appointed by Bishop Neligan to the vicarage of Waitara, and will take up his work when Mr Evans returns.

WELLINGTON PROVINCE.

Miss Nixon, of Wanganui, is visiting friends in Wellington. MessrsJ. and H. M. Copel. Palmerston, have left en route for Engl nd. Miss H. Acland, of Canterbury, is the guest of Mrs Orford in Wanganui. Mrs. Riddiford (Wellington) has gone to Sydney for a visit. Miss F. Stafford (Wellington) has gone to Auckland for the Golf Tournament, Mr. and Mrs. Borlase returned to New Zealand by the last steamer from Sydney. Madame Boeufve (Auckland) is paying a visit to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Russell (Palmerston) were in Wellington for the races. Mr. and Mrs. Knox Gilmer have returned to Wellington, after a month or so spent in Melbourne and Sydney. Mrs. A. M. Johnson (Masterton) has been in Wellington, staying with Dr. and Mrs. Tripe. Mr Arthur Empson, of England, is paying New Zealand a flying visit, and is staying in Wanganui. Mrs. Sinclair and Miss Sinclair (Dunedin) have eome to Wellington for the winter months. Miss Kebbell, who has been visiting relations in Wellington, has returned to Ohau. Mrs E. Hitchings, Feilding, was a visitor to Palmerston for a few days lasi week. Miss Matthews, Wairarapa. is staying with her sister. Mi’s O. Monrad, Palmerston. Mrs White. Hawke’s Bay. has just spent several days with her sister. Mrs A. Guy, Palmerston. Mr and Mrs Lionel Wallace and family leave Palmerston this week for Auckland, where they will reside in future. M. Jean Laurent. (Paris), who is visiting New Zealand, is making a short stay in Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Lysnar (Gisborne) are paying a visit to Wellington, where the former is attending several conferences. Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Wilson have returned to Bulls, after a short stay in Wellington. Miss Esme Somerville is back in Wellington, after a trip to Auckland, where she has been staying with Mrs. Sloman. Mrs. Beard (Wairarapa) is at present the guest of Mrs. Harding, Hobsonstreet, Wellington.

Mr. Hislop represented Ney Zealand's interests at the Maritime Cpnference in London. In addition to seeing many places of interest on the Courtnent, Mr. Hislop also managed a flying trip to Cairo, which was one of his most enjoyable experiences. A distinguished visitor at present la Wellington is Miss Speneer, who is travelling round the world on behalf of th? Young Women’s Christian Association. A branch was formed in NVellington some eighteen months ago. and since then hat done a great deal of quiet good. Art effort is now being made to enlarge its scope, and much is expected of Mist Spence’s visit.
