AUCKLAND PROVINCE. Mr. A. S. Biss, of Wellington, arrived by the Takapuna on Monday. Mr. J. Clark and Mr. J. Gouldsmith (Gisborne), are visiting Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. Sherrill are bark in Giaborne from Napier. Mr. C. P. Davies has returned to Gisborne from Napier. The Rev. L. L. Cubit t is recovering from his recent illness, though be is still unable to return to his parish. Miss Bagnall (Palmerston North) is visiting Gisborne. She is the guest of Miss H. Woodbine .Johnson. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Hartland left Auckland last week on a visit to the South. Mr and Mrs E. Davis were passengers for the South by the Taka puna last week. '• Mr. A. R. Harris was a passenger for the South by the Takapuna on Monday. Mr. J. M. Geddis, of the Hansard Stair, !<• ft for Wellington by the Ngapuhi on Sunday. Mr. C. McMahon, of the well-known theatrical firm, was a passenger for the South by the Ngapuhi on Sunday. Captain Norbury, of the s.s. Rarawa, returned from a visit to Sydney by the Mokoia on Monday. Mr. .John Rowe, Mayor of Onehunga, left for the South by the Takapuna on Monday. Mr F. Earl left for the South by the Takapuna last week, en route to Wellington to attend the Court of Appeal. The Misses Barker (2), ami Messrs. Barker (2) have left Gisborne on a visit to the islands. Mr. Esam, Government valuer, has gone to Cambridge to recruit after his severe illness. The many friends of Mr Daniel Stewart, one of the pioneers of the North, will regret to learn that he is seriously ill at llelensville, suffering from a complication of chest troubles. Mi 1 J. C. Dromgool, of Tuakau, has accepted a temporary appointment as first assistant of the Thames High School, in. place of Mr Thompson who is incapacitated through ill health. Dr. Neligan. the Anglican Bishop of the diocese, accompanied by Captain Bentick, of 11.M.5. Prometheus, paid a visit to the Veterans’ Home last week. Captain Bentick was much interested in the veterans, and promised to pay them another visit. The Rev. G. A. Carver will sail on Monday, August 5, by the Mokoia, for Sydney. On the same date the Bishop will take charge of St. Sepulchre’s Parish, and will be assisted by the Rev. E. 11. Wyatt. This arrangement will last until the coining, of the new vicar. Mr. R. Stewart was in Melbourne recently entertained at dinner by Mr. Andrew Mack, for whom he acted as manager during his tour in New Zealand, and was presented by Mr. Mack with a gold match-box. initialled in diamonds, and inscribed' with an appropriate expression of friendship. At the county social ball last week a large number of friends assembled to bid farewell to Mr R. 11. Harrison on the eve of bis departure from Coromandel (says our Coromandel correspondent). Mr T. W. Rhodes presided, and during the evening presented Mr Harrison with a handsome silver mounted walking stick, suitably inscribed, and an autograph album, containing numerous signatures of his Coromandel friends. HAWKE’S BAY PROVINCE. Mrs. Hees, of Gisborne, has been on a visit to Napier. Mrs. Tylic, of Wellington, is in Napier for some weeks. Mrs. and Miss Margoliouth, of Napier, are on a visit to Wanganui. 4 Mr. and Mrs. L. McHardy, of Blackhead, have been in Napier for a week. Mrs. Logan, of Napier, is in Wellington for a week or so. Miss McKenzie, of Gisborne, lias been on a visit to Napier. ‘ Mrs. Holmes Dean, of Napier, is on a visit to Wellington. Mrs. Campbell, of Dunedin, is spending a holiday in Napier. Mr Evans, of Christchurch, is in Napier for some weeks. Mrs. Hadfield has returned to Wellington from a visit to Napier. Miss Trent, of Napier, is on a visit to Wellington. Miss Hansard (Napier) is in Wellington for a week or two. Miss McLean has returned to Napier from a trip to Christchurch. Miss Dewes has returned to Napier after a visit to “ Brooklands.” Miss Hewlings is on a visit to Hawkes Bay, after spending some months in Dunedin. Miss G. Thompson, who has been visiting Napier, has returned to Christchurch. Mr. R. Smith has returned to Dunedin, after being in Napier for some weeks. Messrs. T. Hyde and R. R. Groom have returned to Napier from a business visit to Gisborne. Captain Lascelles, of the 3rd Dragoon Guards, is on a visit to Napier. Capt. Lascelles is a native of Napier, and has been retained by the Defence Department as instructor for a year or two.

TARANAKI PROVINCE. Mr H. 8. Fitzherbert, S. M., New Plymouth, has returned from his trip to Palmerston North. Mr Higgin, of the Bank of New Zealand, New Plymouth, has been transferred to Opunake. Miss Gwen O'Callighan, Dunedin, is the guest of Miss Ethel Standish, New Plymouth. Miss Maida Horner, Patea, who has been on a visit to her friends in New Plymouth, has now returned. Mr Elliott, of Waikato, formerly partner of Mr Nat King, of Stratford, is at present visiting New Plymouth.

Mr Ernest Hill, youngest son of the late Mr T. Hill (Collector of Customs, Auckland), has left New Plymouth for England, where he intends continuing his studies in electricity.

W ELLINGTON PROVINCE. Mr and Mrs Tothill, Invercargill, are paying a visit to Wellington. Mrs and Miss Seaton, Wellington, have gone to Sydney for - some weeks. Mr and Mrs Blaek, Otago, have been in Wellington staying with Mrs Stott. Mrs Harry' Atkinson, Hawera, is spending a few days in Wellington. Miss Gregson, of Wanganui, is staying with relations in Christchurch. Miss Alexander, of Wanganui, paid a flying visit to Wellington last week. Mrs C. Colbeek. Palmerston North, has returned from a visit to Wanganui. Mr H. B. Drew, Wellington, visited Palmerston North, last week. Miss Fraser, Dunedin, is in Wellington for the session, staying at Awarua House with Sir Joseph and Lady Ward. Miss Ida Coleridge has been in Wellington staying with her sister, Mrs. W. Johnston, for a few weeks.

Miss Harding, who has been visiting friends in the Wairarapa district, is back in Wellington again.

Mi - and Mrs Didsbury (Victoria) are in Wellington, staying with Mrs Didsbury, sen., for some weeks. Mr and Mrs Gillespie, Feilding, have been visiting friends in Wellington for a few days. Mrs George McLean, with the Misses McLean, Dunedin, have come up to Wellington for the session. . . Mr W. Levin is back at Greatford, after a stay of a month or so in Wellington. Mr and Mrs Plimmer, Wellington, are en route for a cruise to Fiji and the South Sea Islands. Lieut.-Colonel Chaytor has returned to Marlborough, after a short stay in Wellington. Mr Justice Williams- and Mrs Willianntj Dunedin, are ~spend(ing a few days in Wellington. ■ Mrs L. Gorton has returned to Feilding, after a stay in Wellington with Mrs Edwin. Mr. and Mrs. P. Miles, of Dunedin, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Liffiton, in Wanganui. Miss E. Izard, of Christchurch, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. Izard, in Wanganui. Miss Dunean, who has been on a visit for six months to Wellington, has returned to Auckland. Miss L. Barnard Brown, ot Wanganui, has returned from her visit up the Wanganui River. The Hon. Edward Lyon, of the 18th Hussars, has arrived in Wellington to take up his duties as A.D.C. to his Excellency the Governor. Mrs Joseph and the Misses Joseph, who have been away from Wellington for two or three years, are shortly leaving the Old Country for a return visit to the colony. During their absence they have travelled extensively abroad, spending several months in turn at Paris, Rome, and Cairo. For the last year or so they have made their headquarters in London.

Gratifying news has reached Wellington of the success of Miss Mary Blair, who has been studying medicine in London for some years past. Miss Blair has just taken the Degrees of Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Medicine at the University of London, and now holds the important position of resident medieal officer of the maternity department .of the New Hospital for Women. She is the daughter of the late Mr J. N. Blair, Engineer-in-Chief for the colony.

Two new arrivals in Wellington are Mr and Mrs Ormiston Chant, who intend to spend several months in the colony. Mr Ormiston Chant is a eivil engineer, who has been sent out by his film to superintend the new destructor which is just being erected for the city. His wife is a niece of Madame Albani, who will be in Wellington before very, long on her concert tour. Mr Ormis-ton-Chant’s mother is well known in England from her crusade against the London music halls. '■ -- —
