AN INVERCARGILL BANQUET.

Amongst tlio most prosperous districts of the colony are without doubt Auckland mid southland. Invercargill is the capital of the latter important district, and its inhabitants are enterprising energetic people. Recently there gathered at the Town Hall 500 members of Masonic Lodges to witness the installation of His Excellency the Governor as Gram! Master. Auckland was represented by the Hon. George Fowlds, and members from Whangarei to Rotorua and Tauranga attended the ceremony. We hen* present a view taken during the Mayoral Installation banquet, whei Mr. W. B. Scandrett entered on his fourth consecutive term, a record unknown in the South, where the office has previously been considered a rolling one. no less than 30 different citizens having held the position of Mayor from 1872 to 1903. Mr. Scandrett is. however, considered especially well-fitted for the position. He was Town Clerk from 1871 to 1893, and since that time has been in the Council either as Councillor or Mayor. We also give a portrait of Mr. Scandrett.
