DEATH OF MR. HUBERT FERGUSON. A very familiar figure in the city was removed by death early last Monday—that of Mr. Hubert Ferguson, inspector of factories and Auckland agent of the Labour Department. Mr. Ferguson. who was G 1 years of age, actively carried out his duties until a few weeks ago, when his health, which had been failing since July last, when he suffered from a severe attack of influenza, became so poor that he was obliged to take a rest. Unfortunately, his heart had become affected, and he gradually became worse. The deceased gentleman was an exceedingly popular officer, for he carried out his duties with great tact, thoroughly administering the Factories Act without causing friction. His death will be regretted by a large circle of friends. He had been 45 years in the Government service. He came to New Zealand in 1862 in the ship Black .Swan, ami first tried his luck on the .Southern diggings. Then, entering.the prison service, he remained in that department for 30 years, when he had attained the rank of chief warder. The governorship of Hokitika prison was offered to him, but he declined for family reasons. Shortly afterwards, upon the formation of the Labour Department, he was appointed inspector of factories for Canterbury. In 1892 he was transferred to Auckland, where he had worked with zeal and discretion ever since. The deceased leaves two sons, Messrs. C. C. Ferguson (Mauku), and Maurice Ferguson (Christchurch), and three daughters, Mesdames L. A. Sanderson (Wellington), J. A. Galbraith (Port Chalmers), and E. Le Cren, of Auckland city. ROWING ASSOCIATION GALA. The second annual gala in connection with the Auckland Rowing Association was held at Orekei on Saturday afternoon last, and attracted a large number of people, who took considerable interest in the trial fours carried out by each of the affiliated clubs. It was originally intended to hold the gala at Kohimarama, but as the water was too rough there for rowing the committee selected Orakei, an adjacent bay, for their sports. The choice was a wise one, for on the day a more suitable place could hardly have been found. The committee managed the affair admirably, and are to be congratulated on the result, of their efforts. Some 20 races were got off. The prizes for the North Shore, Waitemata. West End, and Auckland Clubs were for trophies presented by Mr A.
