Judge Denniston was a passenger for the South by the Rarawa on Sunday. Mr. C. ]•’. C. Miller, of Kawakawa, was admitted as a solicitor by Mr. Justice Denniston, on the motion of Mr. Sharpies Miss L. Coleman and Mr. A. Coleman (Gisborne) have gone on a visit to Christchurch. Mrs. Holgate returned to Auckland from Australia on Sunday by the Manuka. Mr. A. de Bathe Brandon returned to Wellington by the West Coast boat on Sunday. Miss Williamson has returned to Auckland after spending a few weeks with Mrs. Cyril White in Gisborne. The Rev. S. Griffiths, pastor of Devonport Congregational Church, returned from Dunedin by the Rototi last week, accompanied by Mrs. Griffiths. Mr. P. T. Kenway, who has been enjoying a long visit to the Old Country and tho Continent, has returned to his home in Gisborne. Mr. and Mrs. Burgess, Gladstone-road, Parnell, have gone to New Plymouth, where they intern! residing for the next six months. - : Mrs. Arthur Rees, of Gisborne, is at present on a visit to Auckland, and is staying with her sister, Mrs. Hawkins, at the North Shore. Mr. and Mrs. Edmiston, Symondsstreet, Auckland, were passengers to Sydney by the s.s. Mokoia on Monday last. Miss Zoe George, St. Stephen's Avenue, Parnell, leaves Auckland' next Monday, cm a six weeks’ visit to Wellington. Mr. IT. C. Tcwsley, the Wellington manager for Messrs. Sargood, Son and Ewen, who has been spending a holiday in Auckland, was 'a passenger by the outward West Coast boat last week.

Mr. C. F. Goldie, whose paintings of Maori studies have elicited universal admiration, left for Taupo last week, where he will spend about six weeks. Mr. Goldie has arranged for sittings from some of the few genuine old tatooed Maori warriors.

Advice received in Auckland on Monday states that Dr. W. H. Parkes, of Auckland, has passed the examination for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh. Hr. and Mrs. Parkes and family are now on their way back to New’ Zealand.

The departure of Mr. S. G. Rountree, the accountant of the Auckland Savings Bank, on an extended tour to the Old Country, was the occasion, on Saturday, of a presentation to him by his brother officers. The presentation took the form of a portmanteau, the manager handing it to the recipient on behalf of the staff. Mr. A. E. Relf, the English cricket coach, who has been in Auckland during the summer months, under engagement to the Eden District Cricket Club, left for Sydney by the Mokoia on Monday. At Sydney he joins the Moultan for Home, where he is proceeding to assist his country dining the forthcoming season. He is accompanied by Mrs. Relf and child. Air J. Lovell, who has acted as caretaker of the City Council Chambers for the past 25 years, and Airs Lovell were last week presented with handsome presents from the Afayor (Air A. M. Myers) on behalf of himself and the office staff. In the presence of a large gathering of officials the Mayor referred in felicitous terms to the -long record of loyal service rendered by the recipients, who had served under no less than 13 Alayors. They’ had done more than given satisfaction all those years; they had earned the respect and esteem of all their fellow workers. To mark his own personal appreciation the Mayor amidst applause presented Mrs Lovell with a gold brooch and Mr Lovell with a carved pipe. On behalf of the staff Air Myers' handed to Mr and Airs Imvell a handsome dressing-case each. Air Lovell suitably replied. Air Lovell has been granted six months’ leave of absence, and with Airs Lovell leaves on a visit to the Old Country in a few days.

where Miss Moya Campbell has inherited some property. They will make the journey by way of Sydney. and Suez. Mrs Arndt and the Misses Arndt, who have been living in Wellington for the past few years, have gone to England. They will spend some time on the Continent, and it is quite uncertain if they will ever come back to New Zealand. Miss May Richmond, who leaves for England by the Gothic, is an enthusiastic supporter of higher education, and does much to further the cause in Wellington. She is the first woman to be elected a member of the Board of Governors of the Boys’ and Girls’ College, and while in England she means to study the working of similar institutions with" a view to improving the local ones. The kindergarten system is a particular hobby of Miss Richmond’s and for some years her private school has done much towards training childhood in the right way. Not long ago she started a scheme for free kindergarten for the poor, and aided by generous support from the people of Wellington the work has been taken up with vigour, and an establishment, is doing a great deal of good in the poorest quarter of the town. SOUTH ISLAND. Professor and Mrs. Cook left Christchurch last week for England. Miss Denniston (Christchurch) has gone on a visit to Palmerston North. Mrs. and Miss Levin (Methven) are staying with Mrs. John Anderson, Ar-magh-Street, Christchurch. Mr and Mrs C. Wynn Williams (Waikari) are visiting friends in Christchurch. Dr. Alice Moorhouse (Christchurch) has returned from a short visit to Dunedin. Mrs Walter Moore and the Misses Moore (Christchurch) are leaving shortly for a trip to England, via Australia.
