AUCKLAND PROVINCA Mrs. Harold Thomson (Inglewood) is On a visit to her mother, Mrs. Dargayille, Kemuera, Auckland. Miss Steele, Parnell, Auckland, is at present on a visit to friends in Cambridge and Komata. Mr George Henning leaves for America and Europe by the steamer Sonoma this week with a view to keeping his firm abreast of the times with the latest development in motors. Oversea caUexs at the Auckland Tourist Office this week inelude Miss F. Wigmore, of Sydney, and Mr. F. Pretty, England. Mr. Charles Verner, the well-known Irish-American comedian, who comes to New Zealand under special engagement to the Messrs. Macmahon. arrived from Sydney on Sunday by the s.s. Victoria. Mr. and Mrs. B. T. Hawkins, of Birkenhead, returned to Auckland by the s.s. Taviuni (which connected at Fiji with the Maheno). after having spent some months in the United Kingdom and the United States. Mr A. Richards leaves Cambridge on Tuesday for Gisborne. A farewell soc'al is being given him on Monday evening. He will be very much missed as he is very popular with every one who knows him. The Council of the Auckland Railways league has decided to ask Mr. Gerald Peacoeke represent the Auckland League at Wellington in respect to the representation to Government concerning the construc-ion of the East Coast railroad. Mr. Oliver Nicholson, who was last week returned unopposed as the first Mayor of the Borough of Mt. Eden, was for seven years' a member of the Mt. Eden Road Board, of which he was also three years the chairman. Mr 11. M. Garrick, late second officer of the s.s. Manuka, has resigned from the Union Company’s service in order to take up a shore position in Sydney, and Mr D. Ritchie, second officer of the s.s. Mararoa, has taken his place. The Rev. John Wilkins, of Beresfprdstreet Congregational Church, who has been away on a five weeks’ holiday visit to Australia, returned on Sunday by the s.s. Victoria. He will be welcomed home on Thursday evening at a social evening in the Beresford-street Hall. Maggie Papakura, the well - known guide of Rotorua, was a caller at the Auckland Tourist Office, last week. Maggie will visit Auckland again shortly in connection with the public opening of the Maori runanga at the Auckland Museum. Mr XV. Tutts, an old and respected resident of Mount Roskill, is at present seriously ill. At last week’s meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board it was resolved to forward a letter of sympathy to Mr Tutts, and also to grant him three months’ leave of absence from the work of the Board, of which he is a member. Mr J. 11. O’Neill, chairman of the M aitemata County Council, returned from \\ ellington on .Sunday. Whilst in Wellington he interviewed the Minister of j'-iblic Works and obtained a promise of a grant of £5OO for the Henderson Main-north-road. Mr. Hermann Brown, one of Auckland s oldest merchants, and pioneer of the firm of Brown. Barrett and Co., returned to Auckland by the Victoria on Sunday, after an absence of some 16 years, the greater part of which time he has spent in Germany. Mr. Brown will remain in Auckland lietween two or three months liefore returning to Europe, Via South Africa.

Mr Harry Norman, who haa been connected with Bland Holt 1 * organisation for the past 18 years, arrived here yesfor the paat 18 years, is now stage manager for the MacMahon Dramatic Company. Mr Lawrence Birks has been gazetted to the charge of the Tourist Department, Rotorua; Mr Albert George Holland as registrar of the Auckland Land Board; and Annie Eleanor Armitage as official visitor to the Avondale Mental hospital. A presentation was made last week at the Albert Hotel to Mr. W. T. Young, Secretary to the Wellington branch of the Federated Seamen’s Union. It was made by the seamen of Auckland and other friends in recognition of Mr. Young's marriage. The articles donated were a silver salver, silver tea pot, and biscuit barrel, which were each suitably inscribed. On September sth, at the Paeroa Hotel, Mr A. F. Brown, stationmaster at Paeroa, who is leaving Paeroa to take charge of the Thames station, was presented by his friends with a purse of sovereigns. Mr Nicholas made the presentation and spoke in high terms of Mr Brown’s obliging and courteous manner, which had made him many friends in Paeroa during his stay among them. Sir N. Muir-Douglas has been staying in Cambridge for the races with Mr and Mrs Richardson of “Corilee,” and received a hearty welcome and congratulations from his numerous friends upon his marvellous recovery from his bad hunting accident last season; bis son, Mr N. He is succeeded by Air P. E. Cheal, of Auckland. This is the first occasion on which the ’Auckland district has been represented on the Board, and is probably the outcome of the recent resolution of the district committee asking for a representative from each of the four large centres to the Board and Council of the Institute. Mr Cheal will leave for Wellington about the 23rd inst., to attend a meeting of the Board of Examiners resp-et-ing the coming examinations for surveyors’ certificates. HAWKE'S BAY PROVINCE. Air and Mrs J. W. Bright (Gisborne) left last week for a trip to Otago. Alajor and Mrs. Pitt (Auckland) have been staying a few days in Gisborne. Mr. H. Lusk (Napier) is staying in Gisborne for a few days. Miss Smyth (Dannevirke) is at present staying in Gisborne, and is the guest of Airs. R Sherratto. Air. and Airs. Frank Barker- have returned to their home in Gisborne, after a year’s travelling on the Continent. WELLINGTON PROVINCE. Miss Afoore, of Wanganui, has gone for a visit to Wellington. Mr C. Fitzroy (Hawke’s Bay) has been staying in Wellington lately. Mr and Mrs Hislop (Wellington) have gone to Rotorua for some weeks. Mrs Holmes. Palmerston North, is at present in Wellington. Airs McKnight, Palmerston North, has gone on a visit io friends in Wanganui. The Misses Stanford of Wanganui have returned from their visit to Palmerston North. Allss Cave, of Wanganui, has returnad from the golf meeting championship In Christchurch.

Miss Marchant (Dunedin) is in Wellington for a few weeks staying with Mr and Mrs Marchant, Tinakoriroad. Mr and Mrs Gilmer "(Wellington) have gone to Sydney for a holiday trip. Mr R. Cowper (Wellington) and Mina A. Cowper (Wanganui) have gone to Melbourne for some weeks. Dr. and Mrs Andrew have returned to Nelson after a stay in Wellington with Colonel ami Mrs Wood. Mr E. Oppenheim (San Francisco) has been spending two or three weeks in Wellington. Mr and Mrs Norman Gorton, who have been in Sydney for the last month or so, have now returned to Feilding. Miss Campbell, Hunterville, is spending a fortnight’s holiday in Palmerston North. Mrs. Sarjeont (Wanganui) was the guest of Mrs McLennan, Palmerston North, during the golf tournament. Mrs Stewart, (Wanganui) spent a week with Mrs Hannah, Palmerston North. Mrs Satehell, Nelson, was the guest of Miss Wilson. Rangitikei-street. Palmerston North, for a day or two during the week: Mrs E. Reynaids has returned to Dunedin after a stay in Wellington with her parents, the Hon. E. and Mrs Richardson. ■Miss Ashcroft has returned to Wellington after a round of visits in Dunedin where she has been spending the last two or three months. The Rev. J. C. Andrew and Mrs .Andrew have returned to the Wairarapa after a sojourn in Wellington. They have been spending the winter in Nelson. Mr K. Morpeth has left Wellington on a tour to Canada, England, and the United States,, travelling by way of Fiji and Vancouver. Mrs F. Waldegrave, Wellington, and her daughter, Mrs H. Atkinson, Hawera. spent a few days last week with Mrs C. E. Waldegrave, Palmerston North. Mr and Mrs Laing Meason have taken Mrs F. O’B. Loughnan’s house in Hob-son-street (Wellington) for a term, and are now occupying it. Mr and Mrs Loughnan are at present in Palmerston. Dr. and Mrs McArthur (Wellington) have gone to Christ,church for some weeks as Dr. McArthur is sitting oh the Royal Commission in connection with fires on board ships. Mi - H. D. Bell (Wellington) has been re-elected President of the Star Boating Club, an office which ha has held for several consecutive years. The captain, Mr A. S. Biss, was also re-elected, and the new deputy captain is Mr A. H. Barnett. Dr H. H. Pigeon, who has just settler! in Wellington and begun to practise his profession, was for some time surgeon on the cable steamer Tris. A fter his marriage (to Miss Parker of Wellington) he went to the Chatham Islands, where he fulfilled the position of Chief Magistrate and other important roles. Dr. and Mrs Pigeon returned from the Chathams some months ago. Mr. A. D. Stewart, accountant for Messrs. Sargood, Son, and Ewen, in Wellington. who baa been promoted to succeed Mr. 11. C. Tewsley as joint manager of the firm’s Auckland house, has been connected with the firm for twenty-seven years, the last seventeen of which have lieen spent in Wellington. Mr. Montagu Laing. for some years joint manager of the Wellington branch, left on Saturday for Sydney, on route for his new appointment in London. On Tuesday week Mr. fating was entertained by the M'ellingtou staff at the Hotel Arcadia, when a presentation was made him of a valuable silver casket, inlaid with greenstone, and having pendant, from, each of the four earners a greenstone ~ tiki.” the whole living surmounted with a solid silver rim.
