PALMERSTON NORTH.

Dear Bee, August 31. I am always very ready to abuse the climate, so it is only- right to give praise where praise is due. The weather here is glorious—just what one expects in January. The streets look very bright and gay, for ladies are wearing their summer toilettes, a most unusual thing for August. THE INTERPROVINCIAL HIGH SCHOOL MATCH played between teams representing the Napier and Palmerston High Schools was played on the showgrounds on Friday afternoon, ending disastrously for Palmerston. The attendance of spectators was very large. The Napier boys were a heavier team altogether, and outclassed the local boys in every point of the game, finally winning Dy 15 points to 3. The Rev. C. C. Harper acted as referee. At the conclusion of the game the Napier boys arranged themselves in the field and gave a weird Maori war-cry and haka, which was loudly applauded by the Palmerston team and the crowd present. In the evening the visitors were entertained at AN ENJOYABLE SOCIAL in the Hall by the members of the staff of the local High School. All the arrangements were perfect, and a delightful time spent. The supper table was prettily decorated with tall vases of daffodils and other spring flowers. Mrs Harper, Miss Muriel Pegden and Mr Murray contributed songs, and Mr Bernard gave a recitative. Among others present were—Mrs Vernon, wearing black silk and black lace; Mrs J. L. Fate, in the form of the weather, is being most generous. On Monday a team of lady golfers arrived from Wanganui to play a return match with the local club. The match was played on the Hokowhitu Links on Tuesday, play commencing at
