A number of leading citizens assembled in the station on Wednesday afternoon to welcome Sir Joseph Want, who, accompanied by Lady Ward apd Miss Ward passed through Palmerston on their way to Wellington. On the arrival of the .express from the North/ Sir Joseph and party were met by Mr W. T. Wood. M.H.R., who extended them a hearty welcome on behalf of the residents of Palmerston. Mr Wood then made an appropriate little speech, and presented Sir Joseph with a congratulatory address. Sir Joseph expressed his thanks in a few complimentary words, and then made several remarks about postal affairs. At the conclusion of his short speech the party returned to their railway carriage, and were loudly cheered as tin* train steamed out of. the station. A lovely basket <;f spring flowers was presented to Lady Ward by two little sons of Mr and Mrs W’. Park. KINKING. The Olympia Skating Rink finally closed for the season on Saturday last. Among other present during the last few days wore Mr and Mrs Renall, Mrs MeKnight. the Misses Mowlem. Mr and Miss F. Wahlegrave. Mr and Miss Reid, the • Misses O’Brien. Mr V. and the Misses Fitzherbert. Mr and the Misses Collins. Miss Dorothy Waldegrave. GOLF. The following men played a match on the Hokowhitu links last Saturday to qualify for the club's championship:—• Messrs W. Strang. J. Strang. A. Barraud, <’. J. Monro. V. Harman. P. C. Freetb, IL C. Moore. A. N. Jones. C. Sims. I*. McHardy. F. Goldingham, A. Seifert, H. Cooper. The first eight will play off for the championship. Ou Wednesday afternoon the men’s stroke competition was played. P. Sim. W. Strang. IL G. Moore, C. J. Monro, J. Strang, G. Sian, P. C. Fveethi A. N. Jones, and P. McHardy were the entries. P. .McHardy was the Vinner, with Jones second.
