But we must not allow the picturesque clement in Mr. Seddon’s history ts lead us astray. Our narrative has brought us to the year 186 h. which in two important respects marks a turning point in his career. In the first place, he married. In Williamstown, when he was employed in the locomotive works, ho had become acquainted with the family of Captain Spotswood, and had apparently paid a certain amount of attention to Miss Louisa Spotswood. The captain was a grandson of an ex-Govemor of Bombay, and the family did not apparently encourage the hopes of the young engineer. But by 1569 young Seddon could show that lie was in a fair way to succeed in life, and he made a flying trip to Victoria in that year to bring home his bride. It is not for us at such a time to dwell upon this aspect of his life; but when Sir John Hall said in Christchurch last week that be believed that Mr. Seddon owed his advancement and his success very largely to his wife, he expressed sentiments to which those who knew the Premier most intimately would be most willing to subscribe.
