Mrs Fred Kenderdiue has returned to 'Auckland from the Waikato, quite recovered from her recent illness.

Mr and Mrs Wells, of “Oakleigh,” Cambridge,*are on a trip to Rotorua, Wairakei, and Taupo.

Mrs Cattins (Kati Kati) has bc-n on a visit to Archdeacon and Mrs Willis, of Cambridge.

Miss Maud Buckland (Auckland) is at present ou a visit to her sister, Mrs Banks, of Gwynneland’s, Cambridge.

Mr. C. J. Parker, of “Emerald Hills.” Gisborne, leaves shortly on a visit to England. Mr. Arthur Rosser, who attended the Trades and Labour Conference at Christchurch, returned to Auckland last week.

Mr and Mrs W. L. Rees, of Gisborne, who have been for a short trip to Napier, have returned home.

Miss Fothergill, ex-matron of the Grey River Hospital. Greymouth, is staying with Mrs. Coldicutt, Graftonroad, Auckland.

Mr. H. B. Hewitt, first assistant master at the Parawai school, Thames, has been granted three months' leave of absence, owing to ill-health.

At the meeting of the Auckland Grammar School Board last week, the appointment of M r - Heaton as assistantmaster of the school, was confirmed.

Miss Keogh (Parnell), who has been spending a holiday in Rotorua and Hamilton, returns to Auckland this week.

Mr and Mrs W. Coates, of Rotorangi, have taken over Mr. Major’s lease of the Fencourt homestead, and will shortly take up their residence there (writes our Cambridge correspondent). The Rev. and Mrs Herbert Williams, of Gisborne, who have been away for some time visiting England lor the benefit of Mrs Williams’ health, are back again.

Mrs. Hursthouse (Wellington) is staying with Mrs. Burd, Hamilton. Toe many friends of Mr. Hursthouse, who heard with regret ol his recent illness, will be pleased to learn of his improvement at the Hamilton Hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. George Heron, sen., of Remuera, left for Sydney by the Mokoia on Monday, en route for China and Japan. They expect to be away for six months, returning for the Christchurch Exhibition in November. ; Prior to the commencement of the ordinary business at the last meeting of the Hamilton Rugby Union, Mr. W. . Smith, who was recently married, was the. recipient of a presentation from the Hamilton footballers. Dr. Marsaek, who has occupied the position of honorary surgeon to the Parnell Fire Brigade for the past 11 years, was last week made the recipient of a silver medal and three bars as a mark of appreciation on the part of the brigade for his long and valuable services. Owing to a scarcity of teachers. Mr. R. 11. ileriot, head teacher of the Rcinitcrn School, who intended retiring on Monday last, has been requested by the Education Board to remain in charge, of the school until the end of May. Mr. Heriot has decided to fall in with the wishes of the Board. Mr. F. H. Pickering, the general manager in New Zealand of the Sun Fire Office of London, returned on Sunday by. the. Takapuna from Wellington after attending the annual meeting of the Council of Fire Underwriters’ of New Zealand.

News was received by cable in Auckland last week of the promotion of Captain C. Fenton, son of Mrs H. H. Fenton, North Shore, to the command of the “Hudson,” owned by the Standard Oil Company of America, and also of hie marriage to Miss Jennie Montgomery of New York.

Miss Bakewell, of Ponsouby, who for many years has been connected with tbe Western Springs Baptist Sunday-school was recently presented by tbe church Sunday school teachers, parents and children, with a silver fruit-jlish, eruet and butter-dish, on the oeeaaiolr of her approaching marriage to Mr A. E. Fair, of Pukerimu. Dr. Roland Aiekin, who has been absent from Auckland for eight years, returned to the colony by the- s.s. Rakoia. Since taking his medical degrees at Edinburgh three years ago, Dr. Aiekin has filled positions in five London hospitals, and was special house surgeon in the Birmingham general hospital. He intends to enter into practice in Auckland.

Our Hamilton correspondent wires that word by cable announces the death of Mrs* Kate O’Neill, widow of the late Hon. James O’Neill. The deceased lady arrived at Kohimarama with her husband in the late thirties. There were twelve children, of whom the following survive: Dr. J. G. O’Neill, San Franeiseo, Lewis O’Neill, barrister, Hamilton, Colonel W. H. O’Neill, Royal Artillery, and Captain H. F. O’Neill, of Dublin Fusileers. All five daughters were married to officers in the navy, viz., Captain Hunt, Paymaster Flood, Captain Willcox, Lieut. Harrison, and Lieut. Wyatt. Mr. Betliell, who is a son of Lord Westbury, is on a pleasure visit to Xew Zealand/ Sir Evan Janies, who was recently in Wellington, is a distinguished Anglo Indian. For many years he held very important positions in the Indian Civil Service. but since his retirement he has teen travelling a good deal in other parts of the world. After a few days in Wellington Sir Evan Tames went on to Napier, en route for the wonderland of Rotorua. Miss Holmes, who has been travelling abroad for the last* eighteen months, has returned to Wellington, and is occupying her house in Hawkestonc street again. While away she spent some time in India before going on to England and Europe. Miss Holmes is an energetic vice-president of tiie Shakespeare Society, and an enthusiast in the cause of art. She holds an iinpvtant position on the committee of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, and is untiring in her efforts for the good of the cause.

A letter received by mail from Port Said contains advice of the progress of Sir Joseph Ward and his party up to that stage of their journey to the Postal Congress. As soon as the s.s. Moldavia left Perth the passengers met and formed a sports committee and drew up a programme of the usual kind. Sir Joseph Ward being unanimously elected chairman. The New Zealand party were represented in the winners by Miss Eileen Ward (who won the tie and cigarette race, and also the bull board tournament. and received a silver photo frame and a pair of vases). Mr. B. M. Wilson, private secretary to our PostmasterGeneral. received a cabin clock for the best costume worn at a fancy dress ball, io which he went as a Chinese mandarin. In the several concerts held on the voyage Sir Joseph Ward and his daughter took prominent parts, the Minister’s singing of "Tree from the Bog" and ‘‘There’s Bound to b? a Row” meeting with great favour.
