Dear Bee,- Febtnary 16. A SURPRISE PARTY visited Mrs J. Bell on Friday evening. It was their intention to have danced on the lawns in the moonlight, but a shower of rain put that out of the question. Mnsie and charades passed the time very pleasantly inside. Among those present were the Misses Bell (3), Robinson (3), Hayward (2), Ensor, Currie, Keeling, Randolph, Reed, Armstrong, Patterson and others. Saturday was not a pleasant day FOR TENNIS, slight showers falling off and on all the afternoon, but the, at tendance of <p!ayers was unusually targe. Stone and .Martin, etc., etc. A TEAAI OF AIANAWATU POLO PLAYERS journeyed to Hawke’s Bay last week, and played a match at Hastings. They won by the narrow margin of one goal. The Strang Bros. (3) and Mr. Gifford Moore played for Palmerston. This week the Hawke’s Bay players visited Palmerston and played a match on the Hokowhitu grounds. They were defeated by 7 goals to L The same team played for Palmerston. ■ , Thursday was very dull and threatening for MRS. J. BELL’S CROQUET PARTY. Sharp showers fell in the morning, making the lawns damp, but otherwise everything was perfect, and all present spent a most enjoyable time. Afternoon tea, sweets, and fruit were served in the drawing-room, which had lw»sj tastefully arranged with miniature sunflowers. A break-making competition ended with the usual ’disastrous results to the majority of the players. Airs. F. S. Ale. Rae was the only one who seemed capable of making any hoops. She won the first prize, a silver-mounted puff box, with the good score of 16 hoops. Mrs.--Campbell was second with four hoops, and reteeived a green silver-mounted rpe-eimen glass.
