Dear Bee, January 19. The weather was perfect on Wednesday last for - ' r ■ AIRS J. BELL'S CROQUET PARTY. The pretty grounds were looking their best. The lawns were a pleasure to play- on. they were so trim. Afternoon tea and delicious cakes, fruit and sweets were served in the garden iu tha shade of the trees. During the afternoon there was a “break-making” competition. which afforded a lot of excitement' and amusement. As is usual on such occasions, players who never fail to make a large number of hoops in ordinary practice could not make more than one or two. Miss Margaret Waldegrave. who was the prize-winner with a score of six hoops, was presented with silver hatpins. Miss Cohen (Wellington) was second, and received a photo frame. THE ROSE' AND CARNATION CLUB. had a summer show the other day. The cult of the garden seems to be very popular in Wellington again, as the membership of the club is increasing rapidly. Some beautiful carnations were shown: among the successful growers being: Mrs H. M. Gore, Mrs Tosswell (Hastings}. Mrs Marchant, Mrs Dalrymple (Bulls). and Mrs Izard. Mrs Crawford and Miss Marchant carried off prizes for bouquets. There was a wonderful exhibit of gladioli. grown on the windy heights of Vogeltown. In colour and size they were unusually beautiful. Among the spectators at the show were: Mrs H. M. Gore, wearing a reel canvas dress, and white hat; Mrs Marchant, in black voile and silk: Miss Marchant, white muslin and floral bat : Mrs Adams, navy tailor-made and blue hat; Mrs Crawford, white embroidered lin n: Miss Malcolm, black and white shepherd’s plaid, and red hat: Miss Fraser, grey blue eolienne .and blue hat: Miss LaingMeason. reseda canvas and floral hat; Miss Johnston, ecru embroidered linen, Mack tulle hat; Mrs AV. Johnston, Indian red linen and floral hat; Mrs W. Turnbull, white linen with embroidery, pale blue hat; Mrs Dalrymple, black tailor-made: Mrs Izard, white linen and violet toque; Mrs S. Izard, blue and white spotted voile and blue hat; Mrs Reid, black and white voile; Mrs Drown, black and white foulard, black hat: Mrs Young, floral delaine and hat with flowers. On? day lately Mrs Hales gave another of her DELIGHTFUL AT HOMES. There was a large number of guests, although so many.people are now out of town. A l>evy of girls assisted with the tea. and Mrs Hales’ sons were indefatigable in looking after their mother’s guests. Some excellent music was much appreciated. Mrs Hales wore a smart gown of taffetas with vest ami ruffles of delicate lace; Lady Ward was in embroidered yoile and a smart toque: Miss Ward, white muslin; Mrs Watson,

QUITE A NUMBER OF WEDDINGS are coming off shortly. Mrs Grace has issued invitations for the marriage of Miss Pearl Grace and Mr Dalziell, which is to l>e solemnized on February Sth. They are going to England for their wedding trip. Another honeymoon couple are Mr and. Mrs Latham, who are also off to England. Their wedding was just before Christmas. A coming marriage is that of Mr Maurice Denniston and Miss Moya Fitzgerald, which is to be quite soon. Then a bride-elect is Miss Isa Fitzherbert. who is going to England with her sister, Mrs Latham and their parents. Her wedding will be in the early summer.
