Dear Bee, December 15. There was a very large and appreciative audience at the Opera House on Friday, Bth hist., when THE ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY gave their second concert of the season. It was one of the best, if not the best, local concert ever held in Wanganui, and emphasised the fact that under Air. Leslie Peck’s baton the members have made most marked progress. During the evening Madame Emily Briggs, who was in excellent voice, sang two soles, Air. Bertram Yeates contributed a bassoon solo, and Mr. George Buckley a cornet solo. Amongst the large audience I noticed the pupils of.the Collegiate School and the Girls’ College, Mrs. and Miss Alexander, Air. and Airs. J. Stevenson, Air. R. Stevenson, Airs. On Tuesday evening, 12th inst., the annual concert given by the pupils of THE GIRLS’ COLLEGE was held in the spacious dining-hall, which was filled to overflowing. Great credit is due to the teachers, as all the items w ere deservedly well received, and the numerous pupils acquitted themselves very well. The annual swimming sports of the Girls’ College were held in the new swimming baths on Wednesday afternoon in the presence of a large number of spectators. Amongst the onlookers were Miss Fraser, in a white linen costume with black picture hat and black ostrich plumes; Miss Knapp, navy blue linen gown with insertion, champagne straw hat with spray of flowers; Miss Richmond, pale green and pink muslin frock with fichu of champagne lace and net, blaek straw hat with plumes; Miss Shand, dainty white crepoline froek, brown straw hat with satin ribbons to match; Miss J. An excellent programme was provided, all the items being loudly applauded. The Liedertafel were assisted by the Orchestral Club, and to Madame Emily Briggs and MrJohn Prouse, of Wellington, were entrusted the solos, their beautiful voices being heard to great advantage.
