AUCKLAND PROVINCE. Mr. Justice Cooper and Miss Cooper, are at present at Waiwera. Dr. If. D. Bamford went South by the Karawa last week. Mrs Sainsbury (Gisborne )has gone for a trip to Christchurch. The Misses Barker (Gisborne) are going on the Sounds’ trip. Mr Grant has returned to Gisborne from his holiday in Rotorua. Miss Grey (Gisborne) has gone for a trip to Dunedin.

Sir Kenneth Douglas, of Wellington, arrived in Auckland on Saturday on a visit.

Sir Geo. Clifford arrived from the South last week to attend the A.R.C. Summer Meeting. Air. J. H. B. Coates, general manager of the National Bank, is spending the holidays in Auckland. Amongst the visitors to Auckland just now are Messrs. Pat. Campbell and A. Beyle, of Christchurch. Mr. R. 11. Irwin, town clerk of Grey Lynn, and his wife, have gone to Rotorua for a fortnight. During Dr. Bewes' absence from Otahuhu, Dr. Clare will attend to his practice.

Mr. F. S. Townley Little, of Otago University, is spending the holidays with his relatives at the North Shore.

Miss Violet Twigg, who has been staying with Mrs Sainsbury (Gisborne), has returned to Napier.

Miss Meta Burke, who has been staying with Mrs Wallis (Gisborne), has returned to Napier.

Miss Grace. Monckton (Wairarapa) is •taying with her brother and sister in Gisborne.

Mr and Mrs Taylor and family, of “Bardowie,” Cambridge, are spending Christmas at Waiwera.

Mr and Mrs James Hally and family, of “Valraai,” Cambridge, were at Waiwera for Christinas.

Mr and Mrs B. Couper and Miss E. Cave (Cambridge) spent Christmas with Mr and Mrs Cave, of Hillside, Papakura.

Miss Cotter, “Oaklands,” Remuera, returned to Auckland on Sunday after an extended visit to Sydney.

Mrs C. J. Clery. of Whangarei, is at present on a visit to her parents at Te Awaniutu.

Mr and Mrs J. P. Vause, of Te Awaniutu, are spending a short holiday at Te Aiolia.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Thompson, of Inglewood, who are at present on a visit to Auckland, are staying with Mrs. Dargaville, Remuera.

Mr E. Kersey Cooper, well known in mining circles, arrived from London by the Kaikoura last week, Mrs Cooper accompanying him.

Mr. A. Hordern, junr., of the wellknown Sydney firm of Anthony Hordern and Sons, arrived in Auckland on Saturday.

The Hon. C. C. Louisson, M.L.C., of Christchurch, accompanied by Mrs. and Miss Louisson, are at present on a visit to Auckeand.

Mr and Mrs Vincent Barker (Gisborne) have gone for a motor trip from Napier to Wellington. From there they go to Dunedin, and catch the Waikaro for the Sounds’ trip.

Nurses A. Bagley, of Dunedin, and M. Purcell, of Wellington, are the first nurses to pass the colonial examination in midwifery. They both obtained great Credit.

The employees on the Ruakura farm last week gave a valedictory social to Mr. M. Mulcahey, the retiring manager, and presented him with a gold chain, and his son with a gold pendant.

Mr. R. W. Hill, who is Mr. VV. F. Massey's secretary, was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court by Chief Justice Sir Robert Stout nt Wellington last treek.

Mrs Gudgeon, wife of the ResidentCommissioner at Rarotonga, was a passenger to Auckland by the Taviuni. She is on a visit to her family in New Zealand. and will be here about four month’s.

Mr. and Mrs. Withy, of Auckland, who are joining the excursion of the Waikare to the Southern Sounds, left Auckland last week. They leave New Zealand on a trip through Europe and Japan in February.

At Messrs Massey Bros.’ engineering works, Auckland, last week, two apprentices, Messrs J. Gilmour and W. Houghton, were presented by Mr Wrigley, the foreman, on behalf of their fellowworkmen, with a pai rof useful surfacegauges, as a mark of esteem on the completion of their apprenticeships.

Mr A. E. Denn has resigned the Auckland managership of the United Insurance Company, and has commenced practice as a fire and marine loss adjuster, accountant and trade assignee. Mr Dean’s abilities are welt known, and his numerous friends will wish him every success in his undertaking.

At the office of Mr A. Hanna, Auckland. last week, Mr W. E. Moore, on behalf of Mr Hanna’s staff, presented Mr A. W. Blair, on the occasion of his departure forWellingtton, with a writing portfolio handsomely bound in Morocco leather. ’The recipient suitably acknowledged the gift, and the pleasing function was brought to a close by the staff singing “For he's a jolly good fellow.”

Mr. S. J. Nathan, who has acted as Vice-Consul for Norway and Sweden for some time, has received notification that the vice-consulate has been dissolved owing tn the sepai taion of Norway and Sweden, but he retains the position as the representative of Swaden. Mr. R. St. Clair will probably be permanently appointed as Vice-Consul tor the new State of Norway. ,

Last week at Mrs Bennett’s millinery establishment in Karangahaperoad, Auckland, the young ladies of the millinery department presented to Mrs Bennett a silver sugar basin and -spoon, nicely engraved, as a Christmas gift, and to show the good feeling between the employer and her employees.

Mr. C. White, who has been stationmaster at Drury for about 2J years, has received notice, of promotion to Ellerslie, at which station he will take up his duties shortly. Some of his friends entertained him at a smoke social in the Drury Hotel a few nights since. The usual toasts being honoured, Mr. McEwan, on rising to propose the toast of "The Guest,” took occasion to present Mr. White with a smoker’s companion, a case of silver-mounted pipes, cigar and cigarette holders, on behalf of a number of his friends.

At the Ponsonby Hall last week friends and supporters of Mr C. H. Poole, M.H.K., iu his recent candidature, tendered him a congratulatory concert. In intimating the object of the assembly, Mr Robert. Darlow, chairman, said that one and all present were desirous of showing in a proper way the pleasure they had in knowing that Mr Poole had been successful in the recent campaign. Further he would extend to Mr Poole on behalf of his friends well wishes for his future career. During the evening a musical programme was gone through, items being rendered by Miss Jackson, Miss Butler, Messrs Bullen, Whitehead, and Blakely. An orchestra discoursed excellent music. Mr F. Whitehead manipulated the phonograph. At the conclusion of the supper interval Mr Poole, from the platform, thanked the electors of Ponsoriby and those present for having had sufficient confidence in him to choose him as their Parliamentary representative, Mr Poole paid » high tribute to Mr John Kneen for tho indefatigable manner in which he had conducted the affairs of the campaign. A very enjoyable function terminated with the customary vote of thanks to all who had assisted in the execution of the splendid programme. TARANAKI PROVINCE. Mr and Mrs Gillies (Hnwera) have left for South Canterbury, where they intend spending a few weeks’ holiday.

WELLINGTON PROVINCE. Mr. and Mrs. A. Izard, of HJanganui,' have left for Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. 8. T. Fitzherbert, of Wanganui, are staying in Dunedin. Mr. J. Fairburn, of Wanganui, is in Auckland for a short holiday. Mr Thynne, of the Bank of Australasia (Palmerston North), has been transferred to Wellington. Miss Fenwick, of Dunedin, is the guest of Miss Newcombe, in Wanganui. Mrs. G. Marshall, of Wangauni, has deft for a visit to Wellington. Mrs. Roehfort, of Elthain, has been staying in Wanganui with her mother, Mrs. A. Lewis. Mrs. M. Marshall, of Pahiatua, is staying in Wanganui with her sister, Mrs. Wickham. ' Miss Bond (Palmerston North) has gone for a two months’ visit to the South Island. Miss M. McLeod, of Hawke's Bay, is the guest of Miss Cameron, in Wanganui. Mr and Mrs A. N. Gibbons have returned from their wedding trip, and are staying at the Club Hotel until their house is finished, writes our Palmerston North correspondent. SOUTH ISL AND. Mr. and Mrs. C. Burnet (Taranaki) are in Christchurch at present. Mrs. Ronalds (Christchurch)-has been the guest of her sister, Mrs. Mills, “Mount Lodge,” Dunedin.

Mrs. Maine (Nelson) is paying a visit to her daughter, Mrs. W. Reece (Christchurch). Mr. and Mrs. J. Watson (Palmerston North) are paying visits amongst their Christchurch friends.

Miss Deans (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs. J. Fraser, of St. Ciair, Dunedin.

Mrs. Hay (South Canterbury) is staying with her sister, Mrs. E. Richardson, at “Everton Lodge,” Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Campbell and family (Christchurch) are in Auckland spending the Christmas holidays.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Studholme havd come to town for the wedding of MisS Hardy-Johnston (writes our Christchurch correspondent). Mrs. John Williams, Miss Williams, and Mr. Herbert Williams (Christchurch) are spending a few weeks in Temuka. Mrs. Rochfort Snow, who has been visiting her friends in Nelson, has returned to Christchurch greatly benefited by th e change.

Miss Helen Denniston, who has been spending a few weeks among her rela, fives in Dunedin, has returned to Christchurch.

Mrs. C. Dalgety, with her children (Christchurch), are in Dunedin, the guests of Mrs. Burnett. Mrs. Dalgety went there to be present at the marriage of her sister, Miss Burnett. . The Rev. Canon Mayne (Dunedin), with Mrs. Mayne and their children, are spending a few days in Christchurch en route to Napier. Canon Mayne has been appointed vicar of the parish of the late Dean Hovell.
