After much preparation and great expectations, the OLD ENGLISH BAZAAR AND FANCY FAIR was opened in the Drill Hall last Tuesday evening, its chief object being to lessen the debt on the Although the weather was very stormy, the hall was crowded with people. Mrs. Courtney and Misses Govett (3) presided over the fancy goods stall, while Misses Skinner (2) and Miss Mathew managed a daintily arranged picture, stall. At the end of the street was a florist shop, where presided Misses Dcvenish George. E. Fookes, Messenger, and E. Beale. The largest shop was that of the plain and fancy work, and the attendants were Mesdames Dockrill, Evans, O’Loughlin. Misses MeKellar, Wilson, and Earp. Close beside it was the pottery stall, in charge, of Airs. Paton and Miss'Smith. The “White Hart” was in the next street, presided over by Mrs. O’Driscoll and Miss Hopkinson. Here refreshing beverages wei> dispensed. “Ye Ladies’ Delight” (sweet stall) was managed by Mesdames H. W. Bullot, and Miss Smith. The tea rooms, “Blue Dragon,” provided a comfortable corner for those who warned a refreshing cup of tea. Alesdames R. and I’. Jury, Bach, Aliases Jury and AlcGonagle were in attendance. The jubilee shop, or jumble stall, where every article could be obtained, was managed by Mrs. Addenbrooke, Misses Wood, Hamerton, G. Holdsworth, and Coombs. The indispensable Christmas tree and bran tub were looked after by Misses A. Hampton, Godfrey, Prichard, Brett, and O’JLoughlin. A shooting gallery was in charge of Mr. R. J. Cock, and the post and telegraph office was supervised by Misses A. Brewster, E. Penn, and G. Colson. Thejre. was also a gipsy fortune-telling tent. During the evening a maypole dance, under the direction of Miss Bedford, was cleverly danced. Different items were given in the concert rooms, such as farces, by Messrs. J. McKean, O. Clark, and B. Scott; musical programme, by Rev. Bradbury; and last, but not least, Airs. Jarley’s waxw;orks, by Aliss Godfrey; all of which were well patronised. Nail-driving and hat-trimming cony>e(titions were also held. Alesdames Evans and Dockrill headed the ladies’ committee. with Aliss Devenish as secretary, while the Rev. Bradbury, the Rev. F. G. Evans, Alei-srs. Kyngdon. Tiseb, Farrar, and Stead, headed the different men’s committees, anil lent valuable assistance. The sewing bees which have been held for the: last six months in St. Alary’s Schoolroom for the bazaar were under the able management of Airs.
