C.J.C. NATIONAL MEETING.

FIRST DAY. ' CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. A foggy morning gave pnice to a fine afternoon, and alt bough the course was •oft and slow the going was sound. There was a large attendance, including His Excellency the Governor and party. For the First Hunters’ Hurdles Handicap Bill Bailey was made a warm favourite, but after leading for half the distance he fell back, and Makuri taking up the running and jtimprug well held comma nd for the rest of the journey, winning easily at the finish. The winner was the absolute outsider of the field. Time, 3.4 1-5. Dividends, £5O 17/4* and £1 4/. Borneo was scratched for the Trial Hurdles, for which ail the starters were well backed. Taxpayer and Wind made the running for about a mile, when the latter was beaten, and Taxpayer went on in front and led over the last hurdle, and looked like a sure winner, but could not respond to Jewel Gun’s strong final run, and was beaten by a couple of lengths. Time. 3.27. Dividends, £2 17/ and £2 12/G. Eighteen horses faced the starter for the Winter (‘up. Master Alix (with Derrett up). Gohlen Knight (owing to the prestige of the Yaldhurst stable ami to backers being unable to make a selection in one of the most open races ever run), and Kremlin (who had shown the best training track form) were the ultimate favourites in 'a well-backed field. Golden Knight, ridden by Nolan, the English jockey, did not move when the barrier rose, and was a dozen lengths in the rear throughout. Veneer. Master Alix. Kremlin, Brighton, ami Tirole were the leading rank in close order for half a mile, at tiie end of which Shrapnel and Full Cry joined them. Kremlin then drew out, and the race was to all appearance over, but at the distance Full Cry challenged, and after a great struggle Kremlin just lasted long enough to win by a head, with Exmoor three lengths away third. Master Alix, Brighton, and Shrapnel shaped well, but the rest of the field were strung out at the finish. Time, 1.45. Divide mis. £6 5/ and £G 12/. All the acceptors for the Grand National Steeplechase went to the post. Haydn looked well, ami was made favourite, and Phaeton i-tis justified his second position, but neither in appearance nor on recent track work were the public warranted in making Kiatere almost as good a favourite as I’haetonitls. Besides these, Inniskillen (probably the best-looking of the lot). Comfort, and Pipi were soundly supported, while Slow Torn had a good following. I nuiskillen, rhaetonitis, Pipi, and Comfort, in the order named, led past the st a ml. but Comfort lost his rider at Cutts’. Inniskilkn increased his lead along the back, where Haydn and Kiatere joined I’ipi and Phaetonitis, who were racing together second. At the top turn Pipi joined 1 nuiskillen in the lead, Haydn taking third place, with rhaetonitis fourth. Kiatere fell at the stand; but there was very little change for the next halfmile. At the six-furlong post the four, leaders were together, Pipi then falling back outpaced. At the turn Inniskillen and Phaetoriitis drew out. but the latter fell at the posts and rails, and Inniskillen led over the last fence, when he was challenged by Haydn; but the former had a good bit in hand, and won comfortably by three lengths. Only the placed horses finished, and as the gn at leaping race of the year it was a disappointing spectacle. Even Inniskiilen hit several fences very hard; but Haydn ami Pipi fenced faultlessly, and were lacking only in pace. rhaetonitis only touched the one obstacle that which brought him down. Kohatu was killed by liis fall, but the others escaped serious injury. Time. 7.17 3-5. Dividends. £5 16/6 ami £1 2/. The Tally-ho Plate was another series of blunders, only the first three getting round. Playfair, a very pretty jumper with a bit of quality, ami Agitator, which ran first and second, were together hi the front practically all the way. 'rime. 5.29 4-5. Dividends. £3 13/6 and £1 (»/. Newtown won tin* .lumpers’ Flat Race pretty comfortably, but Tupara appeared to be blocked on the rails for some distance hi the straight. rime, 2.43 1-5. Dividends, £2 7 (> am! £2 14/. ' The Enfield Steeplechase brought another exhibition of bungling, only the first and second horses- getting round without mistake, Te Kohan winning by four lengths. Thue, 4.1 S 15. Dividends, £6 2/ ami £2 8/. The Hack Handicap. I he concluding event, was won easily by Jolly Friar from Stepaside, Flying Spark. I he favourite, who was lame, finishing third. Time, 1.18. Dividends. £2 17/6 and £3 12/G. The totalizator investments amounted to £15,8’14. SECOND DAY. (’HR ISTCi I URCH, Friday. The second day’s racing opened with the Hunt Clul> Cup. for which all but Te Kohan started. The jumping was much better than on the first day, but the issue was confined to placed horses. Wiwaka eventually winning from Playfair, for which the distance was a little too far, and Rowlock, which led for about two miles. 'Pile Whip fell nt the stand double, but Mr P. Neagle rose in Hie saddle with the horse, and continued the join noy, his clever recovery gaining loud (dicers. Time, 5.13. Dividends. £5 9/ and £1 1/. Blythemaid was always in a good position in the Sumner Handicap, and going to tiie front In the straight, won comfortably from Silverlene. the favourite, which ran a good lace. Mcrginal led to the straight, and I lien collapsed. Time, 2.47 2-5. Dividends. £3 5/ ami 17/6. In the August Handicap King’s Guest ted the field till half way np the straight, when Crichton made Ills effort, and after • short struggle had ait easy win. Jolly Friar, which was a hot favourite, was 4 poor third. Golden Knight was ridden by

Mr G. L. Stead, but was last most of tin way. Time, 1.18 2-5. Dividends, £8 17. and £3 1/6.

Five scratchings, including the steeplechase winner and Huku, both of which had beet; well backed in doubles, left seventeen starteis for the Grand National Hurdles. The paddock during the parade was an animated scene. Romeo greatly pleased by his appearance, as also did Trumpery, Cavalry, and Newtown. Romeo was made a pronounced favourite, Newtown next in demand, but with anything else was at IO to 1, or lief ter fur a win. The big field took the first flight of hurdles in close order, Cavaliy falling. Rungarawa and Romeo led over the next flight, where Durable fell. Passing the stand Rungarawa, Romeo, Daredevil. Newtown and

The Mohican were at the head of the field in the order named, six lengths clear of the next division, but The Mohican then dropped back. Passing Cutts’ Romeo took the lead, but struck the next hurdle heavily, breaking his leg. Trumpery falling over him. The Mohican just escaping by a miiacle. Newtown then went on in front, followed by Levant, with Tupara at the bead of the others. Waiwera moved up rounding the turn and displaced Newtown in the lead, then came Levant. Tupara, Daredevil, Creusot, and Magnificent, all in a cluster, close up. In the straight Creusot went out after Waiwera. and the two took the last hurdle together, barely clear of Tupara. Newtown, Dai edevil, and Magnificent. Creusot had the best of the race home, eventually winning by a length and a half from Waiwera. which had a similar advantage over Tupara. Daredevil was fourth, and Newtown fifth. It was a splendid race but for the accidents. Romeo and Trumpery had to be destroyed. Time, 3.49 2-5. Dividends, £3B 17/ and £4 9/6.

Haydn had an easy and popular win in the Beanfort Steeplechase, but Comfort was running well up when he fell. Only the placed horses. Haydn. Manazona. and Te Kohan got round without mistake. Time. 5.18 4-5. Dividends. £2 11/ and £2 17/6. Exmoor cantered away with th? Islington Handicap, for which he was a very hut favourite. Savoury should have been second, Beau Seaton only beating him a head. Time. 1.47 2-5. Dividends. £2 2/ and £1 13/6. The Second Hunters’ Hurdles, with only four starters, produced an exciting race. Makuri and Bill Bailey ran together to the last huidle, where the latter fell, and Grand Jury and Makuri fought out :i great finish, the latter just getting the verdict. Makuri is a very useful hunter. Time. 3.33. Dividend. £2 1/6. The Woolston Plate was another great race, Whataroa winning by a neck from Bill Perkins, with Matuku. who was favourite, next, and several others, including Banzai, who led to the distance, close up. Time, 1.20 1-5. Dividends, £5 1/6 and £4 13/6. The totalizator investments amounted . to £14.426, an increase of £2793 on last year’s total. CONCLUDING DAY. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The cheerless weather conditions contii'iied to the close of Hie afternoon, but the attendance kept up well. The opening event, the Ladies’ Bracelet, produced a good race between Bill Bailey and Mts-gganae. but the former always had the upper hand, eventually winning by a length and a quarter. Time, 3.5. Dividends, £2 5/6 and £2 14/6. Narcissus and Taxpayer weie similarly matched in the Hack Hurdle Race, which resulted in favour of the former. Time, 3.12. Dividends, £4 10/6. There was a capital race for the Sydenham Hurdle Race, for which Tupara was mad? favourite, with Comfort. Cavalry aud Rungarawa next in demand, while the otheis were well backed. Daredevil and Rungarawa made the running for about I mile, when th? latter broke down, and Daredevil was left in the lead. There was nor much change in the position until rounding the turn for home, where Cavalry fell, and Tupara closed on the leader. Tupara took command at the distance, where Comfort vaive with a stiung, run. but failed to catch the favourite, though beating Daredevil for second place. The Mohican finished strongly fourth, after jumping the last hurdle badly. Tupara’s was a popular win. 'i'ime. .“..27. Dividends. £3 7/6 and £1 12/. There was no pronounced favourite for the Heathcote Handrap. Fiowei o’Clutha. Crichton, Full Ciy And Golder. Knight (Jenkins) claiming most support. Crichton achieved a meritorious win. Caimi? Chiel finished stiongly, but the distance was too far for Full Cry. Golden Knight was resolutely ridden, I.nt was never prominent. Time, 1.32. Dividends, £5 8/6 and £1 16 6. The previous bad jumping wa- eclipsed and Victory alone got round safely. Pipi cantering home by himself amid gieat cheering. The second place, however, was taken by Manazona. who had refused during th? journey. I’haerOnltis and Inniski’.len carried half the money on the machines. Time, 1.30. Dividends. £5 13,6 and £2 8/6. Jolly Friar won the Selwyn Handicap, boating Tessera, which had led from the start in the last few strides, tiie favouiito. Wet Reef, finishing fourth. Time. 1.20. Dividends. £5 12/6 and £2 5/6. Daredevil continued the improvement ho had shown as the mecthrg piogressed, by winning tile Final Hurdle'Race very easily. All the starters Were well ha<’ked. 'l'ime, 3.16. Dividends, £5 14 6 and £2 1/0. The compliment was paid to Mr Neag’.p of installing his mount. Kohuru. a note'l ladies’ hack at agricultural shows, favourite for the Hunters* Plate (on fiat). Out Captain ('nnipbeiTs pair, Makuri and Playfair, had the race to themselves, and only Makuri pulling up allowed Wiwaka to get secoud place. Time. 2.58. Dividends, £2 18/ and £1 9/. The totalisator investments totalled £44.944, against £39.445 last year.

CHRLSTCHIKCH, Saturday. The number of accidents in the Grand National Steeplechases ami Beaufort SteepFychase has led to a revival of the outcry against the fences sat Riccarton. For many years there has hern a feeling among inure practical racing people that the fences are too small, and the lowness of the obstacles led to an appreciable in«Teas<‘ in pace, with tile result that accidents are on the iticreasp. Mishaps are much mon* frequent l lhi nt hey wore 20 years ago. before the fences were put down. There were jumped in those days even if the pace was slower than it is to-day. i;Golden Knight was one of the disappohitfirst and second days' racing *-,» Riccarton. Whether he lias become cunning 1 am not prepared to say, but lie showed no love for his work. On the first day, ridden by Nolan, the apprentice recently imported from England, he displayed cobailde ruble reluctance to leave the mark. ami declined to take hold of his bit and gallop when he did leave. On Thursday he did very little better in Mr G. G. Stead’s hands. Fjerhaps he will learn better manmrs when he. is drawn a bit firmer.* | J Sav oury ran a good horse in the August Handicap on Monday. He nearly fell on Ipp nose entering the straight, but nevertheless was only beaten a head for second place. I'pliiniskillen’s wild jumping in the Grand National Steeplechase is bkdned for the downfall and death of Kohatii. At the first fhnee of the grandstand double the ultimate vflnner jumped right across -Kohatu, who vijiH fencing faultlessly to that point. The latter seems to have hit Innfskillen on the Quarter in rising fo ihe obstacle, with the thsiill that he sTrnck the rail with his chest • ml turned a complete somersault, breaking life neck ami rolling from side to side on tlie jockey in the consequent muscular re•etion. Nobody expected to see <’. Mitchell artise alive. |<Wiien Roim o fell in the Grand National Hurdle Race he was just in front of four or five horses in close ordeV. Tupara was fluferfered with in avoiding the fallen Ipirses. The Mohican also stumbled over Romeo ami was brought on his knees, hut made a most .marvellous recovery: both Jhorses lost several lengths. Trumpery •ftemeil to fall over Romeo, but must have blundered on after the collision, as she 'finally fell ♦><) or 70 yards past the fence. The club s honorary veterinary surgeon was promptly in attendance, and pronounced Kotueu’s injury- (a fractured hind leg) hope* less, ami he was at once put out of pain; ‘lml there was at first some doubt as to Trumpery's injuries, ami it was not until late in the afternoon, when she was still unable to rise, that her destruction was decreed. 'rhe falling of Romeo and Durable has Caused the question to be raised whether horses should lie permitted to start in such en Important race as the Grand National Hurdle Race ami among a large field without previous <xperleme in jumping races. 'Hie answer is. the horses were racing for position, the first half-mile being run in IHtmc. J Kiatere and Kremlin did not see out the Grand National meeting, hut were shipped for Auckland on Thursday evening. .
