Smallbone has been transferred from the Wellington branch of the National Bank to the Newton branch. Mr If. Al. Shepherd, the well-known sharebroker, is conlined to his bed through illness. Air. AL Nillson, of Whangaret. left Auckland last week, by the Ventura for Havana, where he intends to live. Mr. D. I). Hyde. Chief Poultry Expert, was in Hamilton last week visiting the Ruakura Poultry Station. Archdeacon Willis has returned to Cambridge after spending a few days in Auckland. Miss Souter, of Parnell, is at present on a visit to Cambridge staying with her brother, Air. E. Souter. Mr. F. Tibbs, Auckland, has been staying with Air. and Mrs. Wells, of OakJtigh, Cambridge. Aliss Taylor, of “Bardowie.” Cambridge, is at present in Auckland, staying with her grandmother.. Mrs. Whewcll, <jf Orakei Road. Mr. Frank Rhodes, son of Mr. Charles Rhodes, returned to America by the A'entura; He is studying a t the University of California. Surgeon-Captain A. S. Brewis has been transferred from the No. 1 Squadron (Waikato) M.R. to the medical stall' of the No. -2 Regiment A.M.R. (Waikato). Air. W. IL K. Redmond. ALP. for East Clare, and Mrs. Redmond, were through passengers for San Francisco by the Ventura last week. Aliss Sutherland-Smith, who has been appointed lady superintendent of the Thames Technical School, lias taken up her work. The Rev. W. E. Lush, vicar of the Church of the Epiphany, and the Rev. Air. AlcWilliam returned to Auckland from Whangarei by the Ngapuhi last week. Air. J. L. Young, of Messrs. Hcnder?on and McFarlane, returned last week by the Hauroto from a pleasant visit to the Society Islands. Mrs. Young accompanied him. Air. E. H. Bucknam. purser of the ’Frisco mail steamer Ventura.. will have that vessel al San Francisco on holiday leave, and will probably be ashore for two or three trips. Mr McKinnon, choirmaster at Trinity Church, Tauranga. was recently presented with a dressing case by the vicar, members of the vestry ami choir in recognition of his services. Captain Worsp. of the AVaikato, arrived in Auckland last week, and is staying at the Grand Hotel for a week with his family, who are spending the winter months in town. Air. F. IL Brodr ick. of Wellington, arrived in Auckland last week, and after staying a few days at the Grand Hofei went on to Waiwera to join his wife and family, who have been spending the winter there. The employees of the National Insurance Co.. Auckland, through the manager, Mr. W. Williams, have presented to Alt* W. N. Jowitt a spirit stand and biscuit barrel on the occasion of his mariiage to Miss E. A. Moses. Air Lancaster (temporary electrical lecturer at the Thames School of Mines) lias arrived at Thames from Christchurch. Air Given, assistant instructor at the School of Alines, has also arrived, and taken up duty.

Mr. Wallnutt, chief of the Tourist Department, Kutorua, titl'd Mrs. Wallnutt, apent a few days in Hamilton last week on their return journey from Auckland, where they had been spending a couple of weeks. Miss Perkins, of Aratapu, has accepted an invitation from Mrs Burch, of Mercury Bay, to take up her musical classes at the latter place, and a social gatlieiing was recently held in their joint honour at Mercury Bay. Dr. Collins, of Te Arolia, had the misfortune to break his leg below the knee recently. He tripped on a mat and fell violently with his legs crossed. Dr. Seville, of Morrinsville. set the limb, and the patient is doing well. The Mayor of Auckland (Mr. A. AL Myers), Professor Thomas (chairman of the Professorial Board of the Auckland University College), and Professor Brown (acting-chairman of the Grammar School Board) will be the guests of the .Headmasters’ Association at their annual dinner this week. Airs. Fitzgibbon, widow of the late J. J. Fitzgibbon, first postmaster at the Thames, ami afterwards Chief rostmaste r of Canterbury, died on July 29th, at the residence of her daughter. Mrs. J.- S. Hetherington, of the Thames, is the only lady student who has gained honours in the Cambridge University law tripos, being in class 2, and being classed as having attained a position equal to between No. 8 and No. 9 of the masculine candidates. Last week Mrs. Ryan, of Waitekauri Hotel, took her departure from the district. Mrs Ryan, accompanied by the Misses Ryan, goes first - to the Thames on a short visit to her relations, and then comes on to Auckland, where she intends to permanently reside. Mrs Ryan was very much esteemed in Waitekauri. The Rev. Father Furlong, who is to take ov.er the R.C. parish at North Shore, arrived from Gisborne last week by the Talune, having born relieved at Gisborne by Father Dully. Father Furlong was' the recipient of a purse of sovereigns from the Gisborne branch of the Hibernian Society, who deeply regretted his departure, and hoped he would be happy and successful in his new charge. After the conclusion of the general business at th? annual meeting of the Auckland Rowing Club last week, the commodore, Mr. F. E. N. Crombie, on behalf of the members, presented Mr. Coleman, the club’s popular president, with a handsomely framed photograph of last year’s committee. The opportunity was also taken by the president to hand to Mr. Jowitt a marble clock on the occasion of his approaching mariage. The Rev. Father Hays has decided to speak at Whangarei this week. His New Zealand campaign has closed, but he has received so many invitations to speak from Whangarei, including a petition from the Mayor, Councillors and citizens that he has decided to comply at the expense of his personal convenience. Father Hays remains in New Zealand a little while longer on the advice of his physician. Miss Laura L. Hall, upon her leaving Taupiri School to take up duties at Ellerslie School, was presented by the pupils with a pretty gold brooch set with pearls. The presentation was made by Miss Lena Bailey, a sixth standard girl. In the evening Miss Hall was entertained at a farewell social by the residents. Mr. E. B. Cox, chairman of Taupiri School Committee, spoke of the satisfaction Miss Hall’s work had given in the district, and wished her every success in her new' work. Mr. Cox, the schoolmaster, responded on behalf of Miss Hall. On Saturday last the employees of the L.-O’B 'limber Co. had the pleasure of meet'ng Mr. S. 11. Leyland (eldest son of Mt. W. B. Leyland, managing director) to . congratulate him on his approaching marriage, and to present him with a valuable marble clock and silver tea and coffee service. Mr. J. J. Miller, chief clerk at Onehunga, occupied the chair, and in proposing the toast of the evening, referred to the many sterling qualities of their guest, specially emphasising the good feeling which existed between them during his term of office at Onehunga. He (the chairman) had pleasure on behalf of the subscribers in presenting Air Reid with a silver-mounted umbrella, which wws suitably inscribed. Messrs Saunders (Union Co.), and J. Shaldrick (Northern Co.) testified to Mr Reid’s business fact and tin* good feeling which had existed during his term. Ihr work of Ihe shipping companies had been facilitated by Air Reid's knowledge of shipping work, and they deeply regretted his removal from the responsible position he had held. Messrs G. A. Brown.
