Mr. Bert. Rpyle lias received the following cable message from Miss Gertie Campion: “Doctor forbids returning. Have arranged for ray mother to come to Johannesburg. Please remit balance (Gertie Campion fund) immediately by telegraph through Reuter.—Gertie Campion.”

A trial cruise of the steam yacht built for Mr. R. P. Gibbons, of Kopu. Thames, by Messrs. Seagar Bros., of Auckland, took place last week in the harbour. Those on board the yacht on the trip were Mr. C. C. 11. Gibbons (representing the owner). Messrs. Earle and Holland. Mr. H. Wetherilt, chief inspector of machinery and marine, Mr. L. B. Harris, the designer and supervisor of the yacht, of the firm of Messrs. Gibbons and Harris, engineers. Mr. A. E. E. Dodd, of the same firm, Mr. G. J. Garland. Mr. Winks, Captain Allen, of the s.s. Maori. Miss Lawlor, Miss Dawson, Mr. Chas. Seagar, and Mr, Wilson (engineer), The yacht cruised iff the upper reaches of the harbour, where she was photographed. Then, making a straight course to the buoy off the Victoria wharf, a full head of stearii was obtained, and on the run home an average speed of 11 knots was obtained, the machinery working smoothly and evenly. The yacht’s engines are compound quadruple expansion, and are the first quadruple expansion engines ever manufactured in New Zealand, and they worked as quietly as a lady’s watch, and reflect great credit upon the designers and manufacturers. The yacht’s tonnage is about 41 tons gross, and her nominal horsepower is 50. the boiler carrying a very high pressure. She is built for pleasure, and will probably travel a good deal up and down the coast. Her cabin is well upholstered in Russian leather, and i» in itself worth inspection.
