Dear Bee, February 17. From having a neglected, forlorn appearance, the tennis and croquet lawns are so thronged that the six courts are in no way adequate for the number of players present. Saturday was a perfect day, and a delightful tea was dispensed during the afternoon by Mrs Filzherbert and Mrs Tripe, assisted by the Misses Joyoe and Ix>ris Fiteherbert and Dorothy Tripe. Mrs Fitzherbert was wealing a black spotted voile over glace, vest of white silk, and frill of black accordion-pleated chiffon on bodjee, Tuscan hat with black silk niching; Mrs Tripe, white linen skirl, white muslin and Insertion blouse, cream hat with black bows; Mrs F. H. Mcßae, a dainty frock of embroidered Indian muslin qvoi pale blue satin, profusely trimmed with cream and pale blue niched ribbott, deep cream lace yoke, brown and cream hat with brown and pale blue rosea; Mrs Warburton, black and white spotted muslin made with tiny frills edged with narrow white lace, large Hack ohiffon hat with Hack tips; Airs McGill, Holland coat and skirt, white vest, cream hat with brown tulle; Miss Oopelaud, hopsaek Eton costume, strapping and cuna of white, Tuscan hat with cream and

pink ribbon; Mrs Gibbons, white linen coat and skirt, white hat with navy satin bows; Miss Keeling, white linen skirt, white muslin and insertion blouse, navy French sailor with glace bows and fawn quills; Mrs Bagnall, white spotted muslin, pale blue silk belt, large black chiflon hat with tips; Mrs Leary, white dress with white embroidery, can dr nil hat with touches of black; Miss Campbell (Wanganui), pretty white muslin with tiny frills edged with narrow white satin ribbon, black glare belt, ’black hat; Miss Pownall (Wanganui), pink and white floral muslin, trimmed with white lace insertion, cream hat with black bows; Miss Wilson, black and while floral muslin over pink’, white hat; Miss Waldegrave, pale blue linen with white embroidery trimming, sailor hat; Miss Margaret Waldegrave, fawn spotted muslin, with pale blue silk belt, white muslin flop hat; Miss Suttie (Auckland), black skirt, tussore silk blouse, black lint. Others present were: Mrs Copeland, Mrs Waldegrave, Airs Randolph, Mrs Million, Mrs Tunes. Mrs Jamieson, Mrs Thompson, Mrs Elliot, Mrs MeKnight, Mrs Gould, Mrs Aiken, Misses Watson, Porter (2), Reed, Randolph (2), Montgomery, Wylds, Messrs Million, Smith, McGill, Vaughan, Spencer, Shivas, Collins, Thy line, McLean, Ready, Burr, etc., etc. There are two tennis tournaments for men in progress at present at the local courts- handicap singles and handicap doubles. The following are competing: Messrs. Connell, Wither, Harden, I*. Sim. G. Sim, Shivas, Vaughan, Spencer. Richter, Burr, VVylds.xMcGill,

Newton, Ready, Collins, Thynne, and Gibbons. The winners of the first round were Messrs. Connell, Wither, P. >Sini, Vaughan, Spencer, McGill, Smith. Newton, and Gibbons. In the first roun* of the ladies’ handicap singles for Mrs. Warburton’s trophy Misses Reed. Waidegrave, Bell, and Wylds were the winners. Mrs. lunes entertained a few friends to eroquet on Friday afternoon. A dainty tea was served on the lawns. Those present, included Mrs. Millton, Mrs. Gould. Mrs. (Dr.) Campbell, Mrs. and Miss Campbell (Wanganui), Mrs. and Miss Watson, Mrs. Nannestad, Miss Moeller, Miss Irvine, and other’s. A polo match between the A teams of the Rangitikel and Manawatu Clubs, played at Ilokowhilu on Saturday, resulted in a win for the latter by seven goals to five. Rangitikei was represented by Messrs. Dalrymple, Keiller (2), and N. Wilson; Manawatu by A. Strang. J. Strang, W. Strang, and R. Abraham, tn a match between B teams of the same clubs the Rangitikei Club was .successful by .six goals to three. The day was radiantly fine, and there was a large number of very interested lady spectators. Afternoon tea was provided by lady members. A few of those present were: Mrs. A. .Strang, Mrs. J. Strang, Mrs. W. Strang, Mrs. Young, Miss Green. Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Baldwin, Mrs. Mellsop, Mrs. Gifford Moore, Mrs. Abraham, the Misses Abraham, etc. A Feilding bowling team, comprising Dr. Sorley, Messrs. Stewart, Sandilands, and Say-well (skip) visited Palmerston on Saturday afternoon and made an

effort to recover the Yatee Feathers, held by Drew’s rink, but were beaten by 30 to 23 after a fairly interesting game. There was a large attendance of members, and a very enjoyable afternoon was spent. Some time ago I told you that a Dumber of Palmerston ladies had formed themselves into a committee, and intended getting up an amateur horticultural show in aid of the Beautifying Society fluid. The show takes place on Friday, and if the fine weather only lasts, will be a huge success. The committee have divided themselves into subcommittees. Mrs. H. Palmer, Mrs. ■Fieeth, and Mrs. R. Hewit, with the assistance of the Misses Warburton, • F. Waldegrave, Hadfield, J. Fitzherbert, Hankins, Robinson, and Slack are in charge of the refreshment room; Mrs. Cohen. Mrs. J. Strang, amt Mrs. Jamieson are the decorative committee; Mrs. ]j. A. Abraham, Mrs. Campbell, and Miss Randolph, the fruit and vegetable committee: n.nd Mrs. O. Porritt, Mrs. Tripe, and Mrs. Johnston are in charge, of the pot plants, cut flowers, etc. 1 will be able to tell von more in mv next letter. A large audience greeted the appearance of Mr. George Stephenson’s English Opera Company at the Lyceum Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday nights. . Among others present were: Dr. and Mrs. Stowe, Mr. and Mrs. Ixmghnan, Mrs. W. Johnston, Mr. Percy Baldwin, Mrs. V. Baldwin, Mrs. Friend, Mrs. F. 8. Mcßae, Miss Hankins, Miss M. Waldegrave (Wellington), Mrs. and the Misses Fitzherbert. Mr. and Mrs. Millton. Mrs. Innes. Mrs. Leary, Mr. and Mrs. Park. Miss F. Park,- Mr. Hammond, Mrs. Collins. Miss M. Copeland. Mr. J. Copelaud, Mr. Spencer, Mr. Smith, Mr. Vaughan, the Misses Abraham.
