February The opening of the Trinity A’oung Men's ( lul* took place on Thursday aftermx.n. when -winmiing sports wore held at Read's Quay. ’Tin- races were interesting, and attracted a number of people, as it is the first time we have had swimming sports in Gisborne for a number of years. The Rev. Dawson Thomas, president of the (•lull, was responsible for the success of the sports and he was a-blx assisted by Mr Ik
Bright, secretary, and the committee. During the afternoon the City Band gave selections. In the- evening a social was held in the schoolroom, and the prizes were presented. Songs were given by Messrs Dalrymple. I*. Adair. Barlow, and E. D. Smith, and a recitation by Mr J. Bright, and Mr E. Chrisp played the accompaniments. "Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co. have opened a branch of their business in this town, and have taken temporary otlices in Lowe street, until their building is erected. Quite a numlier of large firms have started in Gisborne lately. On Saturday evening the Europeans and Maoris of Wairakaia gave A FAREWELL TO MR AND MRS CYRIL WHITE, who have lived there for so long. The woolshed. which had been decorated, was the scene of the festivities. During the evening a presentation was made by the Europeans and Maoris to Mr White of a silver soup tureen, and to Mrs .White of a silver tea-pot, spirit lamp and set of cutlery. The natives also made a special presentation to Mrs White of a boar’s tusk mounted in gold. THE CISBORNE POLO TEAM travelled up the coast last week to play sfc match against Manga heia. They were beaten by Mangaheia. and returned on Sunday evening. A small dance is to l»e held at Patutahi to-night, and a brakeful of people from town are going out. Mr Monckton has sold his Patutahi property, and is going to travel for six months, after which he intends to buy another place in the district. Mr and Mrs Jackson, who have lately come to Gisborne, intend to remain here, Mr Jackson having bought Mr Acland Hood’s place. Mrs A. W. Bees gave a small afternoon tea on Friday, for Mrs W. L. Rees, who lately ret uni ed from England. At Whataupoko Courts on Saturday Mrs Tombleson and Miss Boylan gave afternoon tea, and at Kaiti Mrs Barlow and Mrs Kane provided tea.
