WELLINGTON.

Dear Bee, January 20. One of the latest improvements to .Wellington is the tea kiosk at Kelburne, which was opened last Wednesday. The day was most disagreeable, but most of the guests arrived by tram—electric and cable —which rendered them independent of the wind and rain. The kiosk has been designed especially for enjoying the fine view. A wide veranda surrounds the main tea-room, which is largely composed of glass. The decoration is most artistic in character. The wind shrieked outside, and the hills between Kelburne and the town were veiled in mists, but inside the kiosk was bright, and the clatter of tea cups made an accompaniment to the cheerful music supplied by the string band. His Worship the Alayor made an opening speech, in which he compared the view to that obtained from the heights of Corcovado, and delilately insinuated that Wellington was not very inferior to Rio de Janiero from a hill-top point of. view. Air. Alartin Kennedy presided, in the absence of Air. Simpson. Airs. Kennedy wore black voile, with insertions of lace, black and white bonnet ; Aliss Kennedy had a smart canvas dress with lace ruffles; Mrs. Mills, black tailor-made and black and white toque: Aliss Mills, navy cloth, and smart hat; Airs. Rhodes, black poplin, and black glace eoat; Airs. Wilson, chestnut cloth and black toque; Aliss Wilson, navy canvas; Airs. Wright, grey hopsack and black picture hat; Airs. Macdonald, black voile and lace; Airs. Simpson, black canvas; Miss Simpson, dark blue tailor-made; Airs. Fulton, navy and white canvas; Airs. Blundell, black’voile,

and black and white toque; Mrs. Youngs blue canvas, and black hat. Others present included the Hon. C. H. Alills, Hon. Colonel Pitt, Mr. Fraser, M.H.R., and Aliss Fraser, Air. and Airs. Pearce, Mr. and Airs. C. Smith; Air. and Mrs. Atkinson, Air. and Airs. Lloyd, Air. and Mrs. Aides, Air. and Airs. Browne, Air, and Airs. Hislop, Air. and Mrs. Reid.

A Wellington artist, Aliss Florence Broome, who went to England a few, years ago, is at present in London, and is getting on very well indeed. Always a clever and original designer, Aliss Broome has studied and worked hard, and now is one of a firm whose specialty, is design of any nature. The enterprise is very flourishing, and quite a large staff of artists is employed. Nearly all of her training was received at the Wellington Technical School, first as pupil and then as instructress. Aliss Broome was so very popular with the students and staff that they are all delighted to hear of her success. Another Wellington artist who has not gone so far afield is also doing well—Miss Edith Bendall, whose specialty is the study of child life. Some of her designs are inimitable. For some months past she has been studying in Sydney, where she has met with great encouragement. Aliss Bcndall is a daughter of Captain Bendall, of

Oriental Bay.
